Trump pled not guilty to a 34-count felony indictment carrying a maximum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/trump-faces-maximum-sentence-136-years-prison-34-count-indictment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">136-year<\/a> prison sentence over 2016 hush-money payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels. <\/p>\n<p>Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, who was the only Republican in the upper chamber to support Trump\u2019s impeachment twice, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romney.senate.gov\/romney-statement-on-indictment-announcement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">condemned <\/a>the indictment as an \u201coverreach\u201d that \u201csets a dangerous precedent for criminalizing political opponents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe President Trump\u2019s character and conduct make him unfit for office,\u201d Romney said. \u201cEven so, I believe the New York prosecutor has stretched to reach felony criminal charges in order to fit a political agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8be37fd6825abda5132ae32b4f1f9beb fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8be37fd6825abda5132ae32b4f1f9beb\"><\/div>\n<p>Even Trump\u2019s competitors for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/trumps-2024-presidential-rivals-jump-defense-indictment-rcna77529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">slammed<\/a> the indictment as a political witch hunt. McConnell, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/06\/even-mitt-romney-condemns-trump-indictment-while-mitch-mcconnell-is-mia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remained silent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While Trump\u2019s charges came from a local prosecutor in Manhattan, the D.A.\u2019s office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/video\/6323970966112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">admitted<\/a> to House Republicans that federal tax dollars were used for its investigation. Trump remains under separate Justice Department investigations over the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot and his handling of classified documents after his White House departure. <\/p>\n<p>The criminal conviction of former President Trump has remained the top item on the Democrats\u2019 policy agenda for eight years. The Department of Justice is their primary vehicle, run by ideologues who have weaponized the federal government to crack down on political opponents. <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/14\/19-times-democrats-and-doj-deliberately-politicized-law-enforcement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Decades of agency misconduct<\/a> led House Republicans to convene a Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government under the Judiciary Committee chaired by Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/14\/19-times-democrats-and-doj-deliberately-politicized-law-enforcement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">19 Times Democrats And DOJ Deliberately Politicized Law Enforcement<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d713b31f0b0eb05783de668fd503044c fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d713b31f0b0eb05783de668fd503044c\"><\/div>\n<p>Within moments of the news that Trump\u2019s indictment was imminent, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/03\/18\/mccarthy-trump-manhattan-da-probe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demanded<\/a> that Republican committees investigate the former president\u2019s prosecution. Republicans\u2019 leader in the Senate, however, remained mute on the topic until Tuesday in what has now become an episode of routine betrayal from the Kentucky lawmaker. McConnell also recently parroted the Democrats\u2019 propaganda related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot when he blasted Fox News for conducting journalism related to the demonstrations. <\/p>\n<p>In March, Fox News prime-time host Tucker Carlson presented his team\u2019s findings after a weeks-long review of more than 40,000 hours of Capitol surveillance footage to which McCarthy gave him access. The Jan. 6 tapes <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/13\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-tucker-carlsons-j6-tapes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">undermined <\/a>the left\u2019s narratives about the riot being a \u201cdeadly insurrection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>[READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/13\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-tucker-carlsons-j6-tapes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Everything You Need To Know About Tucker Carlson\u2019s J6 Tapes<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In that news cycle, McConnell wasn\u2019t silent.
