Predictably, these outlets gloss over how the laws in question are designed to ensure students are voting in the state in which they\u2019re legal residents.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2118551373\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1654de95187ba9df6b2f5635977a024f fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1654de95187ba9df6b2f5635977a024f\"><\/div>\n<p>In a March 29 article titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/29\/us\/politics\/republicans-young-voters-college.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Republicans Face Setbacks in Push to Tighten Voting Laws on College Campuses<\/a>,\u201d The New York Times accused Republican lawmakers of enacting \u201cnew obstacles to voting for college students.\u201d The article takes specific aim at Idaho\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.idaho.gov\/sessioninfo\/billbookmark\/?yr=2023&#038;bn=H0124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HB 124<\/a>, which stipulates that student identification cards are no longer considered valid forms of voter ID.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlarmed over young people increasingly proving to be a force for Democrats at the ballot box, Republican lawmakers in a number of states have been trying to enact new obstacles to voting for college students,\u201d the Times article states, later framing Republicans\u2019 control of the Idaho legislature as a \u201cpower monopoly.\u201d Unsurprisingly, the Times omits the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.idaho.gov\/statutesrules\/idstat\/Title34\/T34CH11\/SECT34-1114\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Idaho law<\/a> permits residents to sign a sworn affidavit when voting if they don\u2019t possess a valid form of voter ID.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times isn\u2019t the only outlet guilty of employing Democrats\u2019 rhetoric to smear Republicans\u2019 election integrity efforts. On March 28, Axios published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/columbus\/2023\/03\/28\/new-ohio-voter-id-law-college-students-bind-id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a> with unsubstantiated claims that Ohio\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.ohio.gov\/legislation\/134\/hb458\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently enacted voter ID law<\/a> \u201ccould have serious implications for out-of-state students this spring.\u201d As The Federalist previously <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/01\/09\/ohio-republicans-score-major-win-for-election-integrity-with-new-voter-id-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, HB 458 requires Ohioans to provide an unexpired \u201cOhio driver\u2019s license, state identification card, or interim identification form issued by the registrar of motor vehicles or a deputy registrar,\u201d a U.S. military ID card, or a U.S. passport or passport card, in order to vote. <\/p>\n<p>With college student IDs not listed as a valid form of voter identification, Axios attempts to forward the left\u2019s \u201cvoter suppression\u201d narrative by describing the so-called \u201cthreat level\u201d the law poses to out-of-state students. <\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2465e8bd578fb446ff3dd75938399578 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2465e8bd578fb446ff3dd75938399578\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe fear is that obtaining the ID card could disrupt an out-of-state student\u2019s financial aid, which is based in part on residency status at home,\u201d the article reads.<\/p>\n<p>Despite leftist outcry, such laws go a long way in helping ensure elections are honest, fair, and secure. While speaking with The Federalist, Jason Snead, the executive director of the Honest Elections Project, explained how \u201cstudent IDs don\u2019t necessarily demonstrate residency \u2026 citizenship, or eligibility to vote in a particular jurisdiction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are actually a legal resident of a state, it\u2019s very easy to get a photo ID,\u201d Snead said. The media-manufactured controversy over these laws is \u201cjust a rehashing of the old attacks on voter ID laws, which have never panned out in any way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-04-15\/republicans-propose-voter-id-laws-to-restrict-college-student-campus-turnout?leadSource=uverify%20wall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bloomberg News<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2023\/4\/14\/editorial-student-voting-republican\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Harvard Crimson<\/a> have also been among those to publish articles framing Republican election integrity bills as laws designed to suppress young voters.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-08e0f562beadf61ded757db161747df7 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-08e0f562beadf61ded757db161747df7\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Democrats Court Young Voters<\/h2>\n<p>As admitted in the aforementioned articles, Democrats have made targeting young voters \u2014 specifically college students \u2014 a key part of their electoral strategy. In recent years, left-wing nonprofits have <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/11\/18\/how-joe-biden-used-taxpayer-money-to-buy-young-voters-in-the-2022-midterms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">used colleges<\/a> as vehicles to run Democrat-favorable get-out-the-vote operations. Among them is <a href=\"https:\/\/civicnation.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Civic Nation<\/a>, a group led by Valerie Jarrett, a former senior adviser to President Barack Obama. <\/p>\n<p>As The Federalist <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/11\/18\/how-joe-biden-used-taxpayer-money-to-buy-young-voters-in-the-2022-midterms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, Civic Nation leads the \u201cALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge,\u201d a leftist-backed initiative\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/allinchallenge.org\/about\/our-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">established in 2016<\/a>\u00a0that encourages colleges to increase voter participation among students. To date,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/allinchallenge.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly 1,000 universities<\/a>\u00a0across all 50 states and the District of Columbia participate in the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Democrat efforts to mobilize college students to vote was also seen in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race earlier this month. During that contest, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/voteamerica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VoteAmerica<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 a left-wing nonprofit \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/11\/heres-every-major-upcoming-election-republicans-should-already-be-preparing-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> it was launching a \u201cWisconsin\u00a0Campus Voter Turnout\u201d program designed to encourage Wisconsin\u2019s \u201c233,238 students on 24 college and university campuses\u201d to vote in the election. Democrat candidate Janet Protasiewicz defeated Republican Daniel Kelly by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2023-elections\/wisconsin-state-supreme-court-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">11 points<\/a> in the race, giving liberals control of the state\u2019s highest court for the first time in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pbswisconsin.org\/news-item\/meet-the-candidates-running-in-the-2023-wisconsin-supreme-court-primary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During the 2022 elections, young voters (18-29) broke for Democrat candidates over Republican ones by a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/circle.tufts.edu\/latest-research\/millions-youth-cast-ballots-decide-key-2022-races\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly 2-to-1 margin<\/a>, making college campuses fertile ground for Democrats to expand their voting base. While their grossly dishonest coverage of Ohio and Idaho\u2019s voter ID laws may suggest otherwise, legacy media don\u2019t care about real voter suppression when it actually happens. (See <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/17\/how-incompetent-election-administration-suppressed-midterm-voters-in-harris-county-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harris County, Texas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/29\/voter-suppression-is-real-and-its-not-what-you-were-told\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Luzerne County, Pennsylvania<\/a>, and a different <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/04\/17\/what-the-msm-wont-tell-you-about-democrats-voter-suppression-in-the-wisconsin-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wisconsin election involving Daniel Kelly<\/a> as examples).<\/p>\n<p>The real reason Democrats are throwing a hissy fit over GOP-backed election integrity laws is that they don\u2019t want their voters to play by the same rules as everyone else. Approaching election administration in this way does nothing but further undermine Americans\u2019 already-waning confidence in the electoral process.
