Dan Kildee (D-Mich.) remains in hospital and will miss out on various votes in the\u00a0U.S. House of Representatives after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his tonsil, his office said in a statement on April 17.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis afternoon, the Congressman had a surgery to remove a small cancerous tumor found in his tonsil,\u201d Kildee\u2019s chief of staff, Mitchell Rivard, <a href=\"https:\/\/dankildee.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/statement-kildee-chief-staff-congressman-s-surgery\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is expected to remain at George Washington University Hospital for the next several days as a part of the normal recovery process. Later in the week, the Congressman is expected to continue his recovery at home,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>Kildee, 64,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us-congressman-diagnosed-with-cancer_5165387.html\">announced<\/a> on March 31 that he had been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma following a\u00a0preventive scan that prompted additional tests.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the Democratic congressman said he planned to have\u00a0surgery to remove the cancer, adding that the\u00a0prognosis after surgery and treatment is \u201cexcellent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Monday\u2019s statement,\u00a0Kildee\u2019s\u00a0chief of staff said the\u00a0congressman is \u201cthankful to have caught his cancer diagnosis early and appreciates the care of his great team of doctors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kildee was first elected to Congress in 2012 and\u00a0represents Michigan\u2019s 8th Congressional District. He is co-chair of the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Due to his surgery and the time needed to recover,\u00a0Kildee will not be present for various votes in the\u00a0U.S. House of Representatives but will instead submit\u00a0written statements for the record to the House Clerk for any missed recorded votes \u201cto keep his constituents updated on his positions,\u201d his office said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Congressman\u2019s district office and Washington, D.C. office remain open and able to assist constituents,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cThe Congressman, his wife\u00a0Jennifer, and the\u00a0Kildee\u00a0family have been touched by all the kind notes and well wishes since his diagnosis. The Congressman thanks his constituents and colleagues in Congress for their continued support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Squamous cell carcinoma\u00a0(SCC) is a type of skin cancer that can\u00a0grow anywhere on your body and is normally triggered by DNA damage from exposure to\u00a0ultraviolet radiation\u00a0or other damaging agents that spark abnormal changes in the squamous cells,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/skin-cancer-information\/squamous-cell-carcinoma\/\">according<\/a> to the Skin Cancer Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>While most\u00a0SCCs\u00a0can typically be easily and\u00a0successfully treated if they are caught early, the raised growths they cause can sometimes become\u00a0disfiguring or fatal if untreated.<\/p>\n<p>An estimated\u00a01.8 million Americans are diagnosed with\u00a0cases of SCC\u00a0every year; with diagnoses of this type of cancer increasing by up to\u00a0200 percent\u00a0in the past three decade<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
