Bragg\u2019s office unsealed the first indictment of a former president this month with 34 charges against Donald Trump related to 2016 hush-money payments to a porn actress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather than enforcing the law, the [Manhattan] DA is using his office to do the bidding of left-wing campaign funders,\u201d Jordan said, outlining the crime statistics that plague Bragg\u2019s New York City constituents. Major crime spiked 22 percent under Bragg\u2019s first year in office, including a 30 percent rise in subway crime, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/05\/nyregion\/new-york-crime-stats.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to the New York Times. The paper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/15\/nyregion\/shoplifting-arrests-nyc.html?smid=tw-nytimes&#038;smtyp=cur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> Saturday that less than 330 people were responsible for almost a third of all shoplifting arrests last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou leave more criminals on the street, you get more crime,\u201d Jordan said.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8ca6bccdf9526071d2f90d4d43d28b19 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8ca6bccdf9526071d2f90d4d43d28b19\"><\/div>\n<p>Democrats countered by scapegoating guns and declared the hearing politically motivated, given the Manhattan DA\u2019s prosecution of the former president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is shameful that the Republicans of this committee would use the pretext of violent crime to play tourist in New York and bully the district attorney,\u201d said New York Rep. Jerry Nadler, the Democrats\u2019 ranking member. \u201cIt is particularly disgraceful that they would use this pretext after doing nothing, nothing to stop gun the gun violence that terrorizes our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nadler called on lawmakers to \u201cstem the iron pipeline\u201d in reference to \u201cthe illicit flow of illegal firearms from states that do less to protect their citizens to New York and elsewhere.\u201d Nadler also argued to move the committee\u2019s hearing to Jordan\u2019s home state of Ohio with claims that red states, not blue states, are at the center of the nation\u2019s crime wave. Local officials responsible for the nation\u2019s unsafe streets, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/12\/the-lefts-funny-new-lie-its-the-red-states-with-more-crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">are Democrats.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Nearly every Democrat on the committee followed suit and went after guns when it was their turn for questioning to a panel of witnesses victimized by criminals who used knives to rob and kill.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e3905671ff85eda61b301e041d4334ce fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e3905671ff85eda61b301e041d4334ce\"><\/div>\n<p>Among the witnesses who testified include Madeline Brame, whose veteran son was fatally stabbed nine times in 2018 and Jose Alba, a bodega owner whom Bragg charged with second-degree murder after fending off a violent robber in self-defense. Alba was stabbed by the assailant\u2019s alleged girlfriend as he was forced to defend himself.<\/p>\n<p>Brame <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/nyc-mother-says-alvin-braggs-office-treated-her-like-garbage-brutal-slaughter-her-veteran-son\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> lawmakers Bragg\u2019s office dismissed her pleas to prosecute those responsible for the murder of her son and treated her like \u201cgarbage.\u201d Alba, whose charges were ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/08\/05\/jose-alba-ditching-nyc-for-dominican-republic-after-murder-charge-dropped\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dropped<\/a> amid public outrage, re-told the story of Bragg sending the bodega owner to Riker\u2019s Island for nearly a week after the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still don\u2019t know why I was charged with murder,\u201d Alba said, speaking through an interpreter. \u201cEven though the charges were dropped, they should not have been brought against me to begin with. I\u2019m now traumatized from the incident. I am not working because I am terrified for my life that someone in a gang will come after me for revenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New York Democrat Congressman Daniel Goodman called the proceedings a \u201ccharade\u201d to protect Trump. No, not a single one of them voted for the bipartisan Safer Communities Act,\u201d said Pennsylvania Congresswoman Madeleine Dean.<\/p>\n<p>Bary Borgen, whose son was beaten in Times Square two years ago in an anti-Semitic attack, responded to the congresswoman by asking the obvious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy isn\u2019t anybody blaming the shooter?\u201d Borgen said. \u201cYou\u2019re blaming guns, no one blames the shooter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Borgen also blasted Nadler at the hearing for being dismissive of demands that his son\u2019s perpetrators be given a fair sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re a Jewish New Yorker,\u201d Borgen said to Nadler. \u201cI called your office numerous times. I called Mr. Schumer\u2019s office, another Jewish New Yorker, numerous times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one called us back,\u201d Borgen added. \u201cNeither one of you came out with a statement on my son\u2019s incident, okay? You\u2019re a Jewish New Yorker. You have Jewish roots here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Runaway crime in New York has proven to be a key liability for the state\u2019s Democrat lawmakers.
