Earnestness is \u201ccringe,\u201d being in love makes one a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intheknow.com\/post\/what-does-simp-mean-tiktok-2020-simping-stand-for\/\">simp<\/a>,\u201d and ambition makes one a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/yourteenmag.com\/social-life\/teen-bullying-tips\/am-i-a-try-hard\">try-hard<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>There is a \u201cdeeper ideology lurking in the minds of younger millennials &#038; Gen Z,\u201d as Esm\u00e9 Partridge <a href=\"https:\/\/thecritic.co.uk\/the-death-of-ideals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writes<\/a>, \u201cthe rejection of idealism in all its forms.\u201d Disenchanted with the world, plagued by hopelessness and nihilism, we have become a generation of zombies \u2014 a group of youth that is too dead to live and too alive to die.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-852885088\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5d0d1be7dabb2073d52b7e6da1291379 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5d0d1be7dabb2073d52b7e6da1291379\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No Purpose or Place<\/h2>\n<p>In the 1920s, famed novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald described his lost generation as one that had \u201cgrown up to find all gods dead, all wars fought, and all faith in man shaken.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A century later, Gen Z finds itself in a similar position. The past <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canvas8.com\/library\/signals\/2021\/04\/21\/liminal-spaces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">haunts<\/a> us, and a stormy future looms over the horizon. Even in our happiest moments, we\u2019ve come to expect something bad just around the corner. Anxiousness afflicts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/folio\/2020\/01\/millennials-and-gen-z-are-more-anxious-than-previous-generations-heres-why.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many<\/a> Zoomers \u2014 more than half of us already think humanity is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/88npnp\/fifty-six-percent-of-young-people-think-humanity-is-doomed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doomed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Though we share similarities with past generations, Gen Z is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calstate.edu\/csu-system\/news\/Pages\/Move-Over-Millennials-How-iGen-Is-Different-Than-Any-Other-Generation-.aspx\">unique<\/a>. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/amac.us\/has-the-woke-wave-peaked-shock-poll-reveals-generation-z-rejects-cancel-culture\/\">argue<\/a> Zoomers will eventually outgrow their crazy beliefs in the same way hippies eventually got jobs and created families. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c361e372-769e-45cd-a063-f5c0a7767cf4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Millennials<\/a>, however, are only getting <em>more<\/em> liberal as they age, breaking one of the oldest rules in politics. According to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/02\/17\/lgbtq-generation-z-gallup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gallup poll<\/a>, roughly 1 in 5 Gen Z adults says he or she is LGBTQ.<\/p>\n<p>First and foremost, Gen Z craves distinction. They want to differentiate themselves from the masses by changing the world through fighting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/sep\/06\/gen-z-climate-change-careers-jobs\">climate change<\/a>, institutional racism, capitalism \u2014 you name it. This might explain why 1 in 4 people aged 16-25 wants to become an <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/changing-america\/enrichment\/arts-culture\/3614182-1-in-4-gen-z-ers-plan-to-become-social-media-influencers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">influencer<\/a> when he or she grows up.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-72b2da5840ef891896e64a38c4dc8919 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-72b2da5840ef891896e64a38c4dc8919\"><\/div>\n<p>Why the thirst for power and status? Humans need goals that require effort to attain. We are like archers who need a clear <em>and higher<\/em> target. The popularity of figures such as Jordan Peterson shows that, especially for young men, it is no longer clear what that target is.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Developmental Crisis<\/h2>\n<p>In the book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/iGen\/Jean-M-Twenge\/9781501152016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iGen<\/a>,\u201d Jean Twenge observes that more than previous generations, Zoomers aren\u2019t growing up. We don\u2019t have a meaningful target anymore. Gen Z is dating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/i-gen-z-men-my-generation-not-dating-why-should-we\">less<\/a>, quitting<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/01\/18\/70percent-of-gen-z-and-millennials-are-considering-leaving-their-jobs-soon.html\"> jobs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/only-28-of-gen-z-attends-church-at-least-once-a-month-survey.html\">not attending church<\/a>, and spending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/newsletter\/2022-04-12\/gen-z-spends-half-its-waking-hours-on-screen-time-heres-the-good-and-bad-news-for-hollywood-the-wide-shot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">half<\/a> its waking time online. If Zoomers need attention, they use <a href=\"https:\/\/earthweb.com\/gen-z-social-media-usage-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram<\/a>. Bored? <a href=\"https:\/\/amplify.nabshow.com\/articles\/podcasts-are-hot-news-is-not-and-genz-is-all-netflix-and-tiktok\/%23:~:text=Gen%2520Z%2520is%2520doing%2520more,least%25205%2520hours%2520a%2520day.\">Netflix<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exchangewire.com\/blog\/2022\/05\/12\/gen-z-users-three-times-more-likely-to-use-youtube-than-tiktok-finds-channel-factory\/\">Youtube<\/a>. Horny? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innerbody.com\/which-generation-practices-the-safest-sex\">Pornhub<\/a>. Hungry? UberEats.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not surprising that pundits like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/article\/the-crisis-of-generation-z\/\">Jesse Singal<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanhaidt.substack.com\/p\/social-media-mental-illness-epidemic\">Jonathan Haidt<\/a> blame social media for Gen Z\u2019s stunted growth. Apps such as TikTok and Instagram have no doubt profoundly affected us, but blaming social media for Gen Z\u2019s mental health epidemic is only half-correct. <\/p>\n<p>Before we had Instagram, we had liberalism. As Patrick Deneen once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/quotes\/402962.Patrick_J_Deneen?page=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a><em>,<\/em> \u201cIt is less a matter of our technology \u2018making us\u2019 than of our deeper political commitments shaping our technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-09c4d03fb55011ddc50dc1e2b8e1ba7d fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-09c4d03fb55011ddc50dc1e2b8e1ba7d\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jaded and Conformist<\/h2>\n<p>Inauthenticity has reached its peak with Gen Z. To be part of the in-group, a Zoomer must adopt a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2020\/05\/14\/on-the-cusp-of-adulthood-and-facing-an-uncertain-future-what-we-know-about-gen-z-so-far-2\/\">live-and-let-live<\/a> attitude and remain blas\u00e9 at all times, unattached to all people and things. Like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/172107-it-s-of-some-interest-that-the-lively-arts-of-the\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gen X<\/a>, they avoid sincerity, choosing instead to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyspr.co.uk\/blog\/understanding-gen-z-post-ironic-humour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ironic<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.34st.com\/article\/2020\/12\/generation-z-tik-tok-humor-mental-health-politics-society-teenager\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> humorous<\/a>, or just plain passionless.<\/p>\n<p>For Zoomers, being serious is \u201ccringe.\u201d They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2021-11-27\/gen-z-college-partisanship-politics-moderates\">dislike<\/a> partisan politics because it\u2019s rooted in taking differences seriously. Gen Z is disproportionately liberal not because they are passionate card-carrying Democrats \u2014 although some of them are \u2014 but because they are <a href=\"https:\/\/bootcamp.uxdesign.cc\/gen-z-and-performative-apathy-cde6d9d49c1f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apathetic<\/a>. They just want to be left alone by what the media portray as Bible thumpers, old white politicians, and conservatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is revealing that the only time Gen Z ever seems mobilized to take things seriously is when a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rebeccabellan\/2020\/06\/12\/gen-z-leads-the-black-lives-matter-movement-on-and-off-social-media\/?sh=53dfd3cd19a8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">police officer kills a black man<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the74million.org\/scotus-pissed-off-the-wrong-generation-gen-z-activists-protest-threat-to-abortion-rights\/\">abortion<\/a> is restricted. Gen Z is so well <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/31\/this-is-your-sign-to-catechize-your-kids-and-yourself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">catechized<\/a> into its political religion that within minutes, like a flock of sheep, millions of Zoomers suddenly start sharing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.juvconsulting.com\/soyouwantotalkabout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">infographics<\/a>, donation pages, and memes all over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/afghanistan-en-vogue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social media<\/a>. Gen Z only cares about a particular issue when a so-called victim group is allegedly oppressed, or there\u2019s a threat to its autonomy. As soon as the latest political trend goes away, Zoomers stop caring.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Generation Without Love<\/h2>\n<p>The sexual revolution of the \u201960s didn\u2019t bring about communism, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2011\/jul\/08\/wilhelm-reich-free-love-orgasmatron\">Wilhelm Reich<\/a> hoped, but <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@bellehookwrite\/attraction-inequality-and-the-dating-economy-a70cbee8e4db\">capitalism in the sexual market<\/a>. Now driven by a desire for recognition, Zoomers want sexual empowerment above all else.<\/p>\n<p>To that end, Zoomers avoid caring about finding relationships. As one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssmag.com\/en\/lifestyle\/32227\/gen-z-series-valentine-s-edition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> found, \u201conly one in 10 Gen Z members say they are \u2018<em>committed to being committed<\/em>,\u2019\u201d preferring solitude (or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/now\/dating-trend-alert-gen-z-202851636.html%23:~:text=Gen%2520Z%2520and%2520millennials%2520were,a%2520relationship%2520with%2520less%2520pressure.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">situationships<\/a>) to real relationships.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since seeking commitment is now perceived as exerting pressure, young people must put up a facade of unseriousness and just look for <a href=\"https:\/\/cheezburger.com\/2052103\/does-he-is-he-gen-z-creates-brilliant-green-flag-and-red-flag-checklists-with-a-grading-system-to\">green flags<\/a> so as not to alienate the person they desire. <\/p>\n<p>Even in a relationship, the psychoanalyzing doesn\u2019t cease. Zoomers analyze texts, obsess over appearance, and worry that their romantic interests are dating other people from Tinder. This perpetual state of uncertainty is so exhausting that many are choosing to either <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/hook-ups-pansexuals-and-holy-connection-love-in-the-time-of-millennials-and-generation-z-182226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">throw out<\/a> sexual rules completely or abstain from relationships altogether.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Repressed and Insecure<\/h2>\n<p>With religious values and sexual norms no longer fixed, many Zoomers struggle to nail down a sense of worth and are thus insecure. Not expressing their real personalities or feelings, these Zoomers live in a perpetual state of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/science-tech\/2019\/07\/why-young-people-are-turning-to-online-live-action-roleplay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LARPing<\/a>\u201d and suffer from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tv\/CT2MRIRgpeP\/\">main character syndrome<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Given their repression of \u201ccringe\u201d thoughts and feelings the in-group might not like, Gen Z\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/gen-zers-much-more-likely-200518520.html\">higher likelihood<\/a> of engaging in self-harm is unsurprising. To escape the torturous emptiness so many Zoomers find themselves in today, many reach for a razor blade or a smartphone. Either Zoomers gobble down <a href=\"https:\/\/newspunch.com\/mass-formation-psychosis-57-of-gen-z-taking-medication-for-serious-mental-illness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drugs for mental illness<\/a>, harm themselves, or vainly attempt to produce a sense of self with endless selfies and videos for their followers. <\/p>\n<p>The Zoomers\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/cphswolfpack.com\/opinion\/gen-z-romanticizes-mental-illness-and-its-not-good\/\">obsession<\/a> with \u201cmental health\u201d and \u201cnormalizing\u201d certain behaviors is a byproduct of their unstable self-image. Without knowing how to make sense of their emotions, they outsource the task of understanding themselves to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valuepenguin.com\/therapy-survey%23:~:text=More%2520than%25208%2520in%252010,than%2520baby%2520boomers%2520(11%2525).\">therapists.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Godless and Selfish<\/h2>\n<p>More than anything, Gen Z wants to <em>feel<\/em> alive. They turned out in droves to support BLM in 2020 because it enabled them to experience the emotional highs and lows of <a href=\"https:\/\/css.cua.edu\/humanitas_journal\/church-of-woke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">religion<\/a> without the responsibilities. As Twitter user Zero HP Lovecraft <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/0x49fa98\/status\/1268541208118378499?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cChristians are persecuted by bureaucrats, tamely and passively,\u201d while black people \u201care persecuted by cops with guns and gas grenades. \u2026 Only one of these is exciting.\u201d In other words, one belief system <em>feels <\/em>boring and uninteresting, the other eventful and real \u2014 hence why many gravitate toward the latter.<\/p>\n<p>Even many modern so-called Christians, as Rod Dreher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/the-prophetic-houellebecq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">observed<\/a>, use religion as \u201ca psychological adjunct to life, a buffer to the harshness of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2022\/jun\/23\/my-generation-is-obsessed-with-the-cult-of-wellness-but-all-that-striving-to-be-your-best-self-can-be-dangerous\">materialistic<\/a>, individualistic lives they actually want to lead.\u201d In the context of Zoomers, that makes religion \u2014 and its secular woke derivatives \u2014 a supposed stimulant for attaining health and well-being. Since Gen Z now worships the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/paulvanderklay.me\/2012\/12\/21\/ross-douthat-on-the-god-within\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">God within<\/a>,\u201d there has been a rise in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/the-new-gnostics\">gnostic beliefs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BijOF8I2t_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-improvement<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2022\/jun\/23\/my-generation-is-obsessed-with-the-cult-of-wellness-but-all-that-striving-to-be-your-best-self-can-be-dangerous\">wellness<\/a> cults, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cxomedia.id\/art-and-culture\/20220118161433-24-173283\/how-astrology-plays-a-big-role-in-gen-zs-way-of-thinking\">astrology<\/a> and tarot, and, of course, LGBT orthodoxy.<\/p>\n<p>In our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barna.com\/research\/atheism-doubles-among-generation-z\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">post-religious <\/a>society, life has been reduced to a biological process that must be optimized for the sake of social approval. Instead of prayer, we use painkillers. Instead of aspiring toward good works that glorify God, we engage in meaningless activities that glorify ourselves. And out of that reality has emerged the next undead generation.
