Plenty of 19-year-olds are, plenty aren\u2019t. While one would hope age translates to more maturity, there are 19-year-olds out there with a far healthier grasp of marriage than the unhappy 40-somethings and 50-somethings populating Hollywood (and the rest of the world) who were too absorbed with \u201cself-love\u201d and girl-bossery to ever give matrimony a shot. For all we know, Brown is one of the former.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1852402088\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a577a6b49f60b5b046fbe0e596f45bde fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a577a6b49f60b5b046fbe0e596f45bde\"><\/div>\n<p>Entered with the right perspective, marriage matures you and enables you to grow <em>alongside<\/em> your spouse, being used for each other\u2019s sanctification and recognizing your need for grace \u2014 rather than postponing marriage until you have everything \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/20\/hailey-biebers-case-for-marrying-before-your-life-is-figured-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">figured out<\/a>,\u201d only to realize you never will. It\u2019s a weighty and holy covenant that should not be entered into lightly, but it\u2019s also a covenant designed for imperfect, unfinished people. If you expect to be done maturing by the time you say, \u201cI do,\u201d your marriage won\u2019t be a happy one.<\/p>\n<p>The maturity and quality of the person you choose to marry matters, obviously, but so does his or her willingness to commit to a lifetime of choosing to love you unconditionally. That commitment makes marriage intimidating, but living and sacrificing alongside someone you love who is equally committed to you is far less scary than intentionally going through life alone for fear of narrowing your options.<\/p>\n<p>More Americans than ever are choosing to put off marriage or avoid it altogether. For some, it\u2019s because they\u2019ve been conditioned to see marriage as an unappealing limitation on their freedom. For others, it\u2019s something they want someday, but not until they have the adventures of self-discovery that are incessantly advertised by the media they consume.<\/p>\n<p>The median age at which Americans get married for the first time now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/content\/dam\/Census\/library\/visualizations\/time-series\/demo\/families-and-households\/ms-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hovers<\/a> around 30 for men and 28 for women, compared to 24 and 22 in 1980. Pew Research in 2019 found that nearly 4 in 10 Americans ages 25-34 were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/single-adults-make-less-money-married-living-alone-rew-research-2021-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">single<\/a>. Women, in particular, have been sold the lie that marriage is a bad trade and that unforgiving careers and playboy lifestyles will leave them more fulfilled. Men have been encouraged to spurn the \u201ctraditionally masculine\u201d role of husband\/father\/protector\/provider, left instead to languish as unadjusted, overgrown children \u2014 a development that leaves even women who might want a husband to conclude that the men aren\u2019t worth it.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8901e8671164e6cca6c9c65173950666 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8901e8671164e6cca6c9c65173950666\"><\/div>\n<p>All the while, our cultural oracles continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/the-reasons-for-getting-married-are-no-longer-valid-2018-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">preach<\/a> that \u201cmarriage doesn\u2019t really make sense anymore\u201d and that we should all \u201cFocus[] on what we can control (which is only ourselves)\u201d because that \u201cmakes us happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But instead of empowering women and perfecting men, that approach has left the sexes more confused, desperate, and unfulfilled. Some women reach the end of their childbearing years before <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/zRNgN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regretting<\/a> the decision to put off starting a family. Other women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/study-feminism-leaving-wake-unhappy-unmarried-amanda-prestigiacomo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">freeze<\/a> their eggs in desperation, hoping to eventually find a mate. Too many <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2018\/12\/11\/the-feminist-life-script-has-made-many-women-miserable-dont-let-it-sucker-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">realize<\/a> too late that they\u2019ve \u201cwasted\u201d their lives, as one distraught 35-year-old woman who identified herself as unmarried, childless, \u201cbroke and mostly friendless\u201d wrote to The Cut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor all these years of quick changes and rash decisions, which I once rationalized as adventurous, exploratory, and living an \u2018original life,\u2019 I have nothing to show for it,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/RWej8#selection-1681.0-1681.168\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lamented<\/a>. \u201cI used to think I was the one who had it all figured out. Adventurous life in the city! Traveling the world! Making memories! Now I feel incredibly hollow. And foolish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the reactions to Brown\u2019s engagement hinted at similar self-reflection on wasted time. \u201cshe\u2019s 19 and engaged and i\u2019m 18 and doing \u2018what celebrity am i?\u2019 quizzes when i\u2019m supposed to be doing my assignment,\u201d one poster <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rheesroses\/status\/1645738957169098752\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e9f7f5a3929a2b7267804ebb27915749 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e9f7f5a3929a2b7267804ebb27915749\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s 19 and engaged. I\u2019m 21 and haven\u2019t been in a single relationship,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dhruviiiparmar\/status\/1645752023789486082\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posted<\/a> another.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>If more young people were thinking intentionally at 19 about how to achieve the love and family they claim to eventually want, they\u2019d have a better chance of avoiding the hopelessness that haunts so many who choose to defer it indefinitely in favor of their own self-indulgence. Ironically, as the woman writing to The Cut\u2019s advice columnist shows, that attempt at \u201cself-discovery\u201d often leaves its victims with a more shattered sense of self than before.<\/p>\n<p>Even more bizarre, the self-obsessed worldview that swindles people into thinking marrying young means \u201cthrowing your life away\u201d is the same one that demands minors be encouraged to mutilate their bodies in the name of twisted self-validation. To a reasonable observer, it\u2019s nonsensical to say that a gender-confused teenager is old enough to chop off her healthy breasts while a 19-year-old is too young to commit to the mutually beneficial covenant of marriage. <\/p>\n<p>But if self-worship is your standard, this grotesque stance is perfectly consistent. Transgender surgeries glorify the idol of self-gratification \u2014 even though they are self-destructive, as every act of self-worship eventually is.<\/p>\n<p>Marriage, on the other hand, demands the constant yet infinitely rewarding decision to sacrifice yourself for your spouse. It\u2019s counter-intuitive if you want to focus on yourself. The irony is, of course, it\u2019ll also make you better and happier.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2022 Vogue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voguehk.com\/en\/article\/fashion\/millie-bobby-brown-june-cover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview<\/a>, Brown noted how her career caused her to bypass \u201cthings the average teenager might do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously my teenage years were different,\u201d she said. \u201cThere were certain things that I definitely missed out on, and then suddenly I turned 18 and I was like \u2026 how lucky am I that I missed out on those things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Brown and her fianc\u00e9 choose the life that a loving, committed marriage brings, they\u2019ll also miss out on the years of disappointment that a tragic number of their marriage-avoidant peers choose to endure \u2014 and they\u2019ll feel just as lucky about it.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3e229f3cec9cf59e333da0030da9c9b4 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3e229f3cec9cf59e333da0030da9c9b4\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">   Elle Purnell is an assistant editor at The Federalist, and received her B.A. in government from Patrick Henry College with a minor in journalism.
