This cohort included former Special Assistant District Attorney Mark F. Pomerantz, whose leaked resignation letter appears responsible for the Manhattan prosecutor\u2019s decision to indict Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg became the first prosecutor to bring criminal charges against a former president when he moved forward last week with the arraignment of Trump on 34 counts of falsifying business records. The <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/05\/alvin-braggs-trump-indictment-is-even-more-pathetic-and-partisan-than-we-could-have-imagined\/\">pathetic<\/a>, barebones indictment was quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/05\/12-anti-trump-pundits-and-lawmakers-who-think-braggs-case-is-terrible\/\">denounced<\/a> by pundits on both sides of the political aisle. Then on Friday, the House Judiciary Committee raised additional <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/07\/exclusive-house-judiciary-expands-investigation-into-manhattan-da-over-trump-indictment\/\">concerns<\/a> about the role Matthew Colangelo, the former No. 3 man in the Biden administration\u2019s Department of Justice, played in the targeting of Trump.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-877862559\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-acdad345936155ab60d007020729dec8 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-acdad345936155ab60d007020729dec8\"><\/div>\n<p>While Bragg\u2019s hiring of Colangelo to reportedly \u201cjump-start\u201d the investigation into Trump further indicates the indictment was politically motivated, the Manhattan D.A. office\u2019s unprecedented use of outside, Democrat-connected lawyers to investigate Trump pre-dates Colangelo\u2019s arrival by nearly a year.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Pattern<\/h2>\n<p>In early to mid-February of 2021, Bragg\u2019s predecessor, District Attorney Cyrus Vance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/18\/nyregion\/trump-investigation-manhattan.html\">arranged<\/a> for private criminal defense attorney and former federal prosecutor Mark Pomerantz to be a special assistant district attorney for the Manhattan D.A.\u2019s office. Pomerantz, whom The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/18\/nyregion\/trump-investigation-manhattan.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> was to work \u201csolely on the Trump investigation,\u201d took a temporary leave of absence from his law firm, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton &#038; Garrison, where he had defended former Sen. Robert Torricelli, D-N.J., against alleged campaign finance violations. But even before being sworn in as a special assistant to the Manhattan D.A., Pomerantz had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/18\/nyregion\/trump-investigation-manhattan.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a> \u201cbeen helping with the case informally for months\u2026\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/18\/nyregion\/trump-investigation-manhattan.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According<\/a> to the Times, \u201cthe hiring of an outsider is a highly unusual move for a prosecutor\u2019s office.\u201d One must wonder, then, how much more unusual it is for the Manhattan D.A.\u2019s office to receive the \u201cinformal\u201d assistance of a private criminal defense attorney. The legacy news outlet, however, justified the hiring of Pomerantz based on the \u201cusual complexity\u201d of \u201cthe two-and-a-half-year investigation of the former president and his family business.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A few months later, the D.A.\u2019s office welcomed two more outsiders, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/elyssa-abuhoff-4774901b8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elyssa Abuhoff<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/carolineswilliamson20127\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Caroline Williamson<\/a>, who also both took leaves of absence from the New York powerhouse Paul, Weiss to work on the Trump investigation as special assistant district attorneys.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-25c20164ccc8375796b74c7eb2157d95 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-25c20164ccc8375796b74c7eb2157d95\"><\/div>\n<p>For a law firm to lend not one but three lawyers to the Manhattan D.A.\u2019s office seems rather magnanimous, until you consider Paul, Weiss\u2019s previous generosity to Joe Biden. During Biden\u2019s White House run, the law firm <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/06\/18\/joe-biden-is-in-new-york-to-fundraise-for-his-2020-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hosted<\/a> a $2,800-per-plate fundraiser for about 100 guests.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The chair of the Paul, Weiss law firm, Brad Karp, also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.com\/americanlawyer\/2020\/11\/02\/biden-taps-big-law-for-fundraising-haul\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">topped<\/a> the list of Biden fundraisers, bundling at least $100,000 for the then-candidate. \u201cAs someone who cares passionately about preserving the rule of law, safeguarding our democracy and protecting fundamental liberties, I\u2019ve been delighted to do everything I possibly can to support the Joe Biden\/Kamala Harris ticket,\u201d Karp <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law360.com\/articles\/1325025\/biglaw-fundraisers-pony-up-for-biden-harris-ticket\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> in an email.<\/p>\n<p>Karp\u2019s support of the Democrat presidential ticket isn\u2019t surprising given that his fellow Paul, Weiss partner Robert Schumer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/house-judiciary-seriously-weighing-subpoenas-012310018.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is<\/a> Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer\u2019s brother.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s connection to the firm, however, dates much further back, with the former secretary of homeland security in the Obama-Biden administration, Jeh Johnson, also heralding from Paul, Weiss. Once elected president, Biden nominated Jonathan Kanter, a former partner of Paul, Weiss, to serve as the top antitrust enforcement official at the Justice Department. In fact, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-03-25\/wall-street-law-firm-emerges-as-n-y-power-center-in-biden-era?leadSource=uverify%2520wall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a>, Paul, Weiss has \u201cemerge[d] as Biden-Era N.Y. Power Center.\u201d<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5bc4113d8541045c6be85672e80fc022 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5bc4113d8541045c6be85672e80fc022\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Resignation<\/h2>\n<p>The three Paul, Weiss alumni sent to the Manhattan D.A.\u2019s office to bolster the Trump investigations would all make news, but for different reasons. Pomerantz first garnered headlines when he resigned as a special assistant district attorney in early 2022, after Bragg became Manhattan\u2019s D.A.<\/p>\n<p>In his resignation letter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/23\/nyregion\/mark-pomerantz-resignation-letter.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leaked<\/a> to The New York Times, Pomerantz said that in late 2021, Bragg\u2019s predecessor, Vance, had \u201cconcluded that the facts warranted prosecution, and he directed the team to present evidence to a grand jury and to seek an indictment of Mr. Trump and other defendants as soon as reasonably possible.\u201d But after replacing Vance as D.A., Bragg decided \u201cnot to go forward with the grand jury presentation and not to seek criminal charges at the present time,\u201d Pomerantz wrote, adding, \u201cThe investigation has been suspended indefinitely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What Pomerantz\u2019s letter did not say, however, was that in late 2021, \u201cat least three career prosecutors asked to move off the investigation,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/07\/politics\/alvin-bragg-trump-investigation\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a> \u201cconcerned that the investigation was moving too quickly, without clear evidence to support possible charges.\u201d Instead, in his resignation, Pomerantz declared he believes \u201cDonald Trump is guilty of numerous felony violations,\u201d that \u201cthe public interest warrants the criminal prosecution of Mr. Trump,\u201d and that \u201csuch a prosecution should be brought without any further delay.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pomerantz later rejoined Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton &#038; Garrison and <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6254762\/mark-pomerantz-book-trump-prosecutor\/\">authored<\/a> a book about the Trump investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Pomerantz\u2019s letter and his claims that Bragg had suspended the Trump probe triggered a political firestorm, which the Manhattan D.A. sought to quell by telling the public the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/07\/politics\/alvin-bragg-trump-investigation\/index.html\">investigation<\/a> was ongoing.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Criminal Charges<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Manhattan D.A.\u2019s office pushed forward in its criminal case against the Trump Corporation. A grand jury had indicted the Trump Corporation in late June of 2021 on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/12\/06\/politics\/trump-organization-fraud-trial-verdict\/index.html\">charges<\/a> it engaged in a scheme to avoid paying taxes on the salaries of high-level executives by instead funneling compensation through perks, such as luxury apartments and cars. A second Trump corporation would later be added to the criminal case that went to trial in late 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The trial team that prosecuted the case included the other two Paul, Weiss attorneys on loan to the Manhattan D.A.\u2019s office: Abuhoff and Williamson. Bragg borrowed a third outside attorney, Gary T. Fishman, from New York\u2019s Democrat Attorney General Letitia James.\u00a0Along with three regular members of the Manhattan D.A.\u2019s office, the three \u201cspecial assistant district attorneys\u201d helped convict the Trump-related business entities in early December 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After securing convictions of the two Trump corporations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/elyssa-abuhoff-4774901b8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Abuhoff<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/carolineswilliamson20127\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Williamson<\/a> ended their \u201cspecial assistant district attorney\u201d relationship with Bragg\u2019s office in December 2022 and went back to Paul, Weiss \u2014 a return that would be short-lived. Abuhoff rejoined the Manhattan D.A.\u2019s office in February 2023, and Williamson returned the next month, but now both as regular members of the staff.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So short was their time back at Paul, Weiss, in fact, that one must wonder if the firm paid them bonuses following their departure from the Manhattan D.A.\u2019s office. The Federalist posed this question to Paul, Weiss, but the inquiry went unanswered. Paul, Weiss also did not respond to questions concerning whether the lawyers received any compensation or Paul, Weiss benefits while on leave to the D.A.\u2019s office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Abuhoff and Williamson\u2019s return to the D.A.\u2019s office followed the news that in early December, Bragg had hired Matthew Colangelo from the Biden DOJ to \u201cjump-start\u201d the office\u2019s investigation into Trump. Upon his inauguration, Biden had appointed Colangelo to serve in the No. 3 slot at the DOJ, showing the trust Biden has in the lawyer now charged with taking down his opponent Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Colangelo had also previously worked in the Obama-Biden administration and as chief counsel and executive deputy attorney general in A.G. James\u2019 office, where he and Fishman reportedly investigated Trump. As noted above, James would later lend Fishman to the Manhattan D.A.\u2019s office, keeping with her campaign promise to \u201cbe a real pain in the -ss\u201d to Trump. It\u2019s no wonder House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan is concerned about Colangelo\u2019s role in the unprecedented indictment. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Connecting the Dots<\/h2>\n<p>But the issue goes much beyond Colangelo, for it seems likely Bragg never would have hired Colangelo had Pomerantz\u2019s resignation letter never been leaked to The New York Times. It\u2019s outrageous that Pomerantz was reportedly \u201cinformally\u201d advising the former Manhattan D.A. while working for the \u201cBiden-Era N.Y. Power Center\u201d law firm with extensive connections to Democrats. Equally outrageous is the fact that the same law firm lent the D.A.\u2019s office three lawyers to bolster the Trump investigation.<\/p>\n<p>It seems Bragg was swayed by New York politics to alter the communist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/sudden-turn-events-could-derail-trump-indictment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boast<\/a>\u00a0of Joseph Stalin\u2019s secret police chief, Lavrentiy Beria: \u201cShow me the man and I\u2019ll show you the crime.\u201d The Manhattan D.A. had the man but couldn\u2019t find the crime.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLend me your top attorneys to show me a crime,\u201d is the new motto of the political machine New York Democrats built to purge the country, communist style, of Trump.
