Changes were only permitted with letters from a student\u2019s parent and a doctor.<\/p>\n<p>When Kluge expressed his uneasiness to the school principal on the first day of courses and mentioned his Christian faith, district officials agreed to let him use the pupils\u2019 last names. You further agree that the use of reCAPTCHA is subject to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/policies\/privacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Privacy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/policies\/terms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terms of Use<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Other students, instructors, and counselors quickly criticized Kluge\u2019s decision and told district administrators that Kluge\u2019s classroom made them feel uneasy.<\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">Following the accusations, the school apparently reversed course and pushed Kluge to resign.<\/p>\n<p>According to court documents, Kluge resigned in 2018 after being threatened with termination if he didn\u2019t address students correctly.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, Kluge filed a lawsuit against the district, alleging that it had broken a federal rule forbidding job discrimination based on religion. She asked for her reinstatement as well as unspecified monetary penalties.<\/p>\n<p>Employers are only compelled by federal law to respect employees\u2019 religious views if doing so won\u2019t put an excessive burden on the business.<\/p>\n<p>While Kluge maintained that using students\u2019 last names wouldn\u2019t burden the school, the 7th Circuit, which is based in Chicago, disagreed and upheld an Indiana federal judge\u2019s decision to dismiss the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/thepoliticalinsider.com\/feds-create-race-gender-speech-codes-for-scientists-to-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Feds Create Race, Gender \u2018Speech Codes\u2019 for Scientists to Use<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Generation Cupcake<\/h3>\n<p>The district made an effort to respect Kluge\u2019s religious objection, the appeals court acknowledged, but it soon became clear that his use of last names \u201cresulted in students feeling disrespected, targeted, and dehumanized, and in disruptions to the learning environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">The requested accommodation, according to the opinion, \u201cworked an undue burden on the school\u2019s educational mission by harming transgender students and negatively impacting the learning environment for transgender students, for other students in classes and in the school generally, and for faculty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rory Gray, Kluge\u2019s legal representative who represents the libertarian Alliance Defending Freedom, said the organization is debating its next course of action.<\/p>\n<p>According to Gray in a statement, \u201cCongress passed Title VII to prevent employers from forcing workers to renounce their beliefs in order to keep their jobs.\u201d \u201cIn this instance, Mr. Kluge went above and above to make accommodations for his students and to treat them all respectfully. Before unjustly punishing Mr. Kluge for his religious convictions, the school district even granted this accommodation.<\/p>\n<p><span><i>Reprinted with permission.
