Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) told Fox News Sunday on April 9.<\/p>\n<p>Graham said that Congress needs to ask itself, \u201c\u2018Should we have a defense agreement with the island of Taiwan?\u2019 We don\u2019t,\u201d he said. \u201cBut yes, I\u2019d be very much open to using U.S. forces to defend Taiwan because it\u2019s in our national security interest to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graham said he believes the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in Beijing is \u201csetting the stage\u00a0possibly for a blockade of Taiwan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Communist Chinese party is going to test us dramatically this year and next year before the election,\u201d he said. \u201cIn 1961, the Russians tried to isolate West Berlin. So I\u2019m fearful that the Chinese may be setting conditions to blockade Taiwan in the coming months or weeks, and we need to respond forcefully if they do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graham cited Taiwan\u2019s role in producing microchips and the risk of the CCP\u2014which is militarizing at a rapid rate\u2014gaining \u201ca monopoly on the digital economy\u201d as a reason for defending the island.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan makes more than 60 percent of the world\u2019s semiconductors and more than 90 percent of the most advanced versions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5034387\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/02\/04\/GettyImages-912479820-1200x881.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/02\/04\/GettyImages-912479820-1200x881.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a> Taiwanese sailors salute the island\u2019s flag on the deck of the Panshih supply ship after taking part in annual drills, at the Tsoying naval base in Kaohsiung on January 31, 2018. (MANDY CHENG\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Chips compose 15 percent of Taiwan\u2019s GDP, and most semiconductors are produced by one company\u2014the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would I do to deter blockage Taiwan? I would let the Chinese know that if you blockade Taiwan, you\u2019re gonna have a hard time getting oil from the Mid-East.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would increase training and get the F-16s they need in Taiwan,\u201d Graham said. \u201cThere\u2019s a backlog. I would solve that backlog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would move war forces to South Korea and Japan,\u201d Graham added. \u201cI would put nuclear-tipped cruise missiles on all of our submarines all over the world like the Russians did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping feel empowered by the chaotic withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan in 2021, Graham added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaiwan\u2019s not the problem. Lindsey Graham\u2019s not the problem. It\u2019s Putin and it\u2019s Xi,\u201d Graham said.<\/p>\n<p>Graham has consistently supported the U.S. sending military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine in its war effort against Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, he said that Russia should be \u201cheld accountable\u201d for destroying an American military drone and added that \u201cyour airplane\u201d should be shot down if \u201cyou ever get near\u201d another American asset flying in international waters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would Ronald Reagan do right now?\u201d Graham said. \u201cHe would start shooting Russian planes down if they were threatening our assets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican foreign policy is in freefall,\u201d Graham said, adding that \u201con multiple fronts, we\u2019re in a dangerous situation. Weakness breeds provocation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) is leading a bipartisan delegation of House members in Taiwan \u201cto discuss ways the U.S. can strengthen our economic and defense relationship with Taiwan in the face of growing threats in the region,\u201d McCaul\u2019s office reported.<\/p>\n<p>At a luncheon in Taipei on April 8, McCaul said that the United States will help Taiwan with armed forces training and accelerate deliveries of self-defense weapons.<\/p>\n<p>McCaul pointed out that he signed off on \u201c22 weapon systems over three years ago\u201d and they \u201chave yet to get into Taiwan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI signed off on those deliveries, and we are doing everything in our power to expedite this,\u201d McCaul said. \u201cPeace through strength is real, and that\u2019s why we need to harden Taiwan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a potential confrontation with the CCP, McCaul said, Taiwan\u2019s defense abilities are \u201cnot where they need to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019re going to have deterrence for peace, we need to get these weapons into Taiwan,\u201d McCaul added.<\/p>\n<p>Under a \u201cone China\u201d policy, the United States acknowledges Beijing\u2019s position that Taiwan is part of China. The United States does not formally recognize Taiwan as a country on paper but maintains relations with the island of around 24 million citizens that has its own government, currency, and military.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrategic ambiguity is not working,\u201d Graham told Fox News Sunday. \u201cChina, after Afghanistan, believes that the store is open, that you can go in and take whatever you want on Biden\u2019s watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe in a \u2018one China\u2019 policy, but I would be willing to fight for Taiwan because Taiwan is a democracy.
