At least, that\u2019s what a new study claims.<\/p>\n<p>And here we all thought it was the steroids.<\/p>\n<p>According to researchers at Dartmouth, rising temperatures could end up accounting for 10 percent of all home runs that will occur this century. That\u2019s because as the air gets warmer, it also gets less dense. This allows baseballs to travel farther.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Freddie Freeman hits many home runs because of climate change. (Photo by Harry How\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The study, published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society on Friday, sought to answer why the last 13 years have seen an upswing in the number of homers. This time period saw hundreds more home runs compared to the previous decade.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-study-says-climate-change-is-altering-the-game-of-baseball\">Study says climate change is altering the game of baseball.<\/h2>\n<p>Does warmer air mean more dingers?<\/p>\n<p>Chris Callahan, lead author of the study and a doctoral student in climate modeling and impacts, says the evidence is \u201cstrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember being surprised at how strong the finding was,\u201d Callahan said. \u201cWe\u2019re not saying that every home run now is because of climate change, but you take the data and slice it any way you want, you find the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Researchers analyzed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/climate-change-blamed-more-home-runs-baseball-warmer-air-more-dingers#&#038;_intcmp=tw_fnc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-omtr-intcmp=\"tw_fnc\">more than 100,000 MLB games<\/a> and 220,000 individual hits. Then, they compared those numbers with games played in unseasonably warm temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGames that were held in open stadiums during the day, when the sun is out, saw a spike in home runs, while games held at night or in domed stadiums would see a smaller number of home runs,\u201d the study found.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the study didn\u2019t account for who was pitching, who was hitting, the dimensions of the park or literally any other thing affecting the number of home runs.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>According to a climate change study, open-air\u00a0Wrigley Field, would see a rise in home runs as the temperatures increase. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Researchers proposed for every 1 degree Celsius increase in temperature, the number of home runs in a game goes up almost 2 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I\u2019m no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outkick.com\/climate-expert-greta-thunberg-deletes-2018-tweet-saying-world-will-end-in-2023-because-the-world-has-not-ended\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Greta Thunberg<\/a>. But I decided to do my own climate change case study with this information.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019 (a record year for home runs in Major League Baseball), teams averaged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/mlb\/news\/mlb-home-runs-are-way-down-so-far-in-2022-heres-how-the-leagues-recent-tinkering-deadened-the-baseball\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1.39 home runs<\/a> per game.
