Topics included best \u201cequity and inclusion\u201d practices for the district as well as \u201cimplicit bias\u201d and \u201cmicroaggressions\u201d training.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to a report from<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/03\/05\/illinois-teachers-shamed-for-color-of-their-skin-in-taxpayer-sponsored-antiracist-training\/\"><span>The Federalist<\/span><\/a><span>, Simmons, the keynote speaker, told attendees that Americans are \u201cspiritually murdering\u201d black students. Simmons also reportedly told listeners that white people removing snow is indicative of systemic racism. The speaker was likely referencing a Los Angeles Times<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2021-02-05\/trumpite-neighbor-unity-capitol-attack\"><span>article<\/span><\/a> <span>wherein the author condemned her Republican neighbor for snow plowing her driveway days after the Capitol riot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In an<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ascd.org\/publications\/newsletters\/education-update\/oct19\/vol61\/num10\/How-to-Be-an-Antiracist-Educator.aspx\"><span>article<\/span><\/a> <span>entitled \u201cHow to Be an Antiracist Educator,\u201d Simmons, who graduated from Yale University, praised The New York Times\u2019 widely-criticized \u201c1619 Project\u201d as the gold standard for education.\u00a0 Simmons also said during a TEDx talk that \u201cwhite supremacy\u201d is the result of schools that refuse to teach \u201cracial justice\u201d and \u201canti-racism\u201d to students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jawillard\/status\/1365273111021686790\"><span>tweet<\/span><\/a> <span>from Jayne Williard, the assistant superintendent of curriculum in District 203, shows that 10 other panelists were slated to talk throughout the \u201canti-racism\u201d training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One of the panelists includes Valda Valburn who is the CEO of Valburn Consulting Group, a diversity and inclusion organization that partners with school districts to teach them how to be \u201canti-racist.\u201d The organization boasts partnerships with the University of Virginia\u2019s business school and a slew of public and private K-12 institutions across the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A whistleblower teacher at a District 203 high school sent The Federalist screenshots of slides obtained from Valburn\u2019s presentation on \u201cLeading for Equity: Efficacy and Action in Schools.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One of the slides listed countless \u201csocially acceptable\u201d forms of \u201ccovert white supremacy,\u201d one example included the campaign slogan \u201cMake America Great Again.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other examples of \u201ccovert white supremacy\u201d included \u201cnot believing experiences of [people of color],\u201d \u201cpolice murdering [people of color],\u201d \u201cEuro-centric Curriculum,\u201d \u201cExpecting [people of color] to teach white people,\u201d \u201cassuming that good intentions are enough,\u201d \u201ccelebrating Columbus Day,\u201d \u201cthe bootstrap theory,\u201d and becoming a \u201cself-appointed white ally.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Valburn\u2019s presentation also defined \u201cracial justice.\u201d The definition drew an eerily similar connection to the rhetoric used by so-called Democratic socialists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSocial justice: A vision of society in which the distribution of resources and power is equitable and all members are physically and psychologically safe and secure,\u201d the slide reads. \u201cSocial justice involves social actors who have a sense of their own agency as well as a sense of social responsibility toward and with individuals and society.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Another slide said that pushing for \u201cdiversity\u201d is not enough because \u201cdiversity\u201d encompasses multiple human characteristics used to identify individuals and groups. The slide insinuates that \u201cdiversity\u201d does not promote \u201cracial justice\u201d because it does not account enough for race.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The training was hosted shortly after the Illinois State Board of Education voted to pass new \u201cculturally responsive\u201d teaching standards that force educators to \u201cembrace and encourage progressive viewpoints.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to a copy of the new standards obtained by<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/illinois-might-mandate-teachers-to-embrace-progressive-viewpoints\"><span>The Daily Wire<\/span><\/a><span>, teachers are required to \u201cassess how their biases and perceptions affect their teaching practice and how they access tools to mitigate their own behaviors.\u201d This includes, but is not limited to, racism, sexism, homophobia, unearned privilege, and Eurocentrism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The legislation makes clear that teachers and leaders must also affirm the identity of gender-dysphoric students.
