He said on March 31 that a routine scan led to more tests, which led to a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma, a common type of skin cancer. While radiation therapy is sometimes used in older or less robust patients, surgical treatment is the preferred course of action. The National Center for Biotechnology Information states that squamous cell carcinoma is often treatable, but in some cases, it can prove fatal.<\/p>\n<p>Kildee, who is 64, remains optimistic about the outcome of his treatment. \u201cIn a few weeks, I will have surgery to remove the cancer. The prognosis after surgery and treatment is excellent,\u201d he said. However, he admitted that he would need time to recover from the procedure. \u201cI\u2019m eager to have this chapter behind me and get back to work,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The congressman was given a warm reception from colleagues. Debbie Dingell, who serves on the committee with Kildee, described him as \u201cone of the strongest people she knows\u201d and without a doubt capable of \u200b\u200bovercoming the diagnosis and making a full recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Kildee\u2019s diagnosis follows in the footsteps of several other high-profile American politicians who have suffered from cancer, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A U.S. congressman said March 31 that he\u2019s been diagnosed with cancer.
