A day later, Putin\u2019s ally and Russia\u2019s Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev\u00a0warned\u00a0that Russia has \u201cmodern unique weapons capable of destroying any adversary, including the United States.\u201d The next day, Russia, which placed its nuclear forces on a heightened alert at the beginning of its invasion of Ukraine,\u00a0fired several nuclear-capable, anti-ship missiles in the Sea of Japan during a simulated attack.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1818145608\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-77bee1d714a75889f6841fed3930f6a4 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-77bee1d714a75889f6841fed3930f6a4\"><\/div>\n<p>Meanwhile, in the U.S., which has been fighting a proxy war with Russia over Ukraine, the media are already pushing voters to concern themselves with the presidential election that is still a year and a half away. Between the two expected front-runners for the GOP nomination, former President Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (who has yet to announce if he will run for president), one has an extensive track record on Russia, while the other\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0offer those same assurances.<\/p>\n<p>Having spent my intelligence career studying Russian war-fighting doctrine and Putin\u2019s mindset, I am confident Trump is the one U.S. leader Putin fears. He has already established a reputation with Putin that he is not to be messed with and won\u2019t shy away from a \u201cmano-a-mano\u201d battle with the Kremlin\u2019s assassin.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the false narrative spread by the U.S. spy agencies and media, Trump was no friend of Putin\u2019s. The 45th\u00a0president is the only U.S. commander-in-chief during whose presidency Putin didn\u2019t invade any country. Here are five reasons why the cold-blooded \u201cformer\u201d KGB operative feared the brash real-estate mogul from New York.<\/p>\n<p>First, in December 2019,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/12\/14\/trump-gets-space-force-as-act-passes-through-both-parties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">President Trump stood up<\/a>\u00a0the first entirely new armed service since 1947, the U.S. Space Force. It was a direct counter to Russia\u2019s space warfare doctrine. Trump understood that the Russians, who formed their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.armscontrol.org\/act\/2001-07\/russia-re-establishes-independent-space-forces__;!!F0Stn7g!DVLZlU6sClGpqE9qK9Pady2R58KKXyKLP-ikL9OvKfZQC-VVVtxu3rUumRXpYOp_e36b-yec1pcPmqto$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">space force in 2001<\/a>, view U.S. reliance on space as an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/space-armageddon-why-pentagon-fears-russia-china-star-wars-weaponry__;!!F0Stn7g!DVLZlU6sClGpqE9qK9Pady2R58KKXyKLP-ikL9OvKfZQC-VVVtxu3rUumRXpYOp_e36b-yec1uEdWkkL$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Achilles heel<\/a>, a strategic vulnerability. Every aspect of U.S. warfighting doctrine is reliant on satellites \u2014 missile warning, navigation, reconnaissance, targeting, command-and-control, and precision strike efforts. Putin gave Russia\u2019s space troops the mission to \u201cblind and deafen\u201d U.S. forces by attacking our satellites in wartime.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-58574fdc45c9e59b551e2373a2c52b92 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-58574fdc45c9e59b551e2373a2c52b92\"><\/div>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.dni.gov\/index.php\/newsroom\/reports-publications\/reports-publications-2023\/item\/2363-2023-annual-threat-assessment-of-the-u-s-intelligence-community__;!!F0Stn7g!DVLZlU6sClGpqE9qK9Pady2R58KKXyKLP-ikL9OvKfZQC-VVVtxu3rUumRXpYOp_e36b-yec1kzqhXvw$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 Annual Threat Assessment<\/a>\u00a0by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence confirmed Russia is training its space forces and fielding \u201cnew antisatellite weapons to disrupt and degrade\u201d U.S. space assets, including the GPS. These weapons include kinetic-kill missiles, ground-based lasers, electronic warfare systems, directed energy weapons, and on-orbit fractional bombardment systems capable of launching a weaponized conventional or nuclear payload. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/breakingdefense.com\/2023\/03\/space-forces-fy24-budget-includes-offensive-options-for-space-what-does-that-mean\/__;!!F0Stn7g!DVLZlU6sClGpqE9qK9Pady2R58KKXyKLP-ikL9OvKfZQC-VVVtxu3rUumRXpYOp_e36b-yec1rOB1joo$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Space Force<\/a>, with its 16,000 active-duty and civilian personnel, has the mission of both protecting U.S. satellites from attacks and also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/breakingdefense.com\/2023\/03\/space-forces-fy24-budget-includes-offensive-options-for-space-what-does-that-mean\/__;!!F0Stn7g!DVLZlU6sClGpqE9qK9Pady2R58KKXyKLP-ikL9OvKfZQC-VVVtxu3rUumRXpYOp_e36b-yec1rOB1joo$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">targeting adversaries\u2019<\/a>\u00a0space and counterspace assets with offensive operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When Trump characterized space as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/05\/01\/trump-touts-plan-for-military-space-force\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the world\u2019s newest warfighting domain<\/a>,\u201d Putin understood that the fiery New Yorker wasn\u2019t intimidated by Russian space warfare and would not hesitate to authorize a strike on Russian satellites, a decision that could extend the battlefield into the space domain.<\/p>\n<p>Second, in September 2018, Trump\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/national-security\/under-trump-u-s-military-ramps-cyber-offensive-against-other-n1019281__;!!F0Stn7g!DVLZlU6sClGpqE9qK9Pady2R58KKXyKLP-ikL9OvKfZQC-VVVtxu3rUumRXpYOp_e36b-yec1maNS9m3$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">authorized offensive cyber operations<\/a> against U.S. adversaries, and the U.S. military\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/national-security\/under-trump-u-s-military-ramps-cyber-offensive-against-other-n1019281__;!!F0Stn7g!DVLZlU6sClGpqE9qK9Pady2R58KKXyKLP-ikL9OvKfZQC-VVVtxu3rUumRXpYOp_e36b-yec1maNS9m3$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ramped up<\/a>\u00a0cyber intrusions into Russia\u2019s power grid. This change in U.S. cyber posture didn\u2019t go unnoticed by Russia, which had been hacking U.S. systems since the late 1990s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/intelligence-putin-russia-cyberattacks-biden__;!!F0Stn7g!DVLZlU6sClGpqE9qK9Pady2R58KKXyKLP-ikL9OvKfZQC-VVVtxu3rUumRXpYOp_e36b-yec1nZVlWRW$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Russia has hacked<\/a>\u00a0every major U.S. federal agency, including the U.S. electrical grid and nuclear facilities. But fearing escalation, U.S. presidents \u2014 except Donald Trump \u2014 abstained from attacking Russian networks. Trump\u2019s move, which untied the hands of U.S. cyber warriors, signaled to Putin that he must think twice before sanctioning crippling\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/putins-cyber-armageddon-doctrine-seeks-expand-russias-offense-beyond-battlefield__;!!F0Stn7g!DVLZlU6sClGpqE9qK9Pady2R58KKXyKLP-ikL9OvKfZQC-VVVtxu3rUumRXpYOp_e36b-yec1hXHaFle$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cyberattacks on U.S. networks, which Russian doctrine<\/a>\u00a0calls for in wartime.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a5463719d1891132aa91c52a7f27afba fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a5463719d1891132aa91c52a7f27afba\"><\/div>\n<p>Third, a year prior, in 2017, Trump\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-cyber-kaspersky\/trump-signs-into-law-u-s-government-ban-on-kaspersky-lab-software-idUSKBN1E62V4__;!!F0Stn7g!DVLZlU6sClGpqE9qK9Pady2R58KKXyKLP-ikL9OvKfZQC-VVVtxu3rUumRXpYOp_e36b-yec1p82xnFN$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signed into law<\/a>\u00a0the U.S. government\u2019s ban on Kaspersky Lab, a Moscow-based anti-virus software firm owned by a former Soviet KGB intelligence officer-turned-cybersecurity expert Eugene Kaspersky. The U.S. bureaucracy, in its infinite wisdom, had this software installed on both civilian and military networks, exposing federal agencies to Russian cyber espionage. Moscow highly likely could <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/exclusive-us-warned-firms-about-russias-kaspersky-software-day-after-invasion-2022-03-31\/__;!!F0Stn7g!DVLZlU6sClGpqE9qK9Pady2R58KKXyKLP-ikL9OvKfZQC-VVVtxu3rUumRXpYOp_e36b-yec1rHksRRT$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">manipulate the software<\/a>\u00a0designed by the Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky to cause harm. Trump mandated the removal of the Russian software within 90 days of issuing the order.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear if all of the agencies were in compliance with Trump\u2019s order when Biden came to power. Last March, the U.S. government, in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/exclusive-us-warned-firms-about-russias-kaspersky-software-day-after-invasion-2022-03-31\/__;!!F0Stn7g!DVLZlU6sClGpqE9qK9Pady2R58KKXyKLP-ikL9OvKfZQC-VVVtxu3rUumRXpYOp_e36b-yec1rHksRRT$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">classified briefings<\/a>, was privately warning American companies about potential Russian cyber intrusions into U.S. critical infrastructure such as water, telecoms, and energy. What is clear is that Putin knows he cannot trick Trump into giving him keys to the American kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth, in 2018,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.newsweek.com\/us-military-killed-200-russians-syria-airstrikes-pompeo-says-trump-considers-883947__;!!F0Stn7g!DVLZlU6sClGpqE9qK9Pady2R58KKXyKLP-ikL9OvKfZQC-VVVtxu3rUumRXpYOp_e36b-yec1vUCcMT_$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trump authorized a missile strike on Syria<\/a> in which approximately 300 Russian fighters from the Wagner Group, Russia\u2019s private mercenary company now fighting in Ukraine, were killed. Russian and U.S. forces have been on opposite sides of Syria, and the U.S. airstrike targeted forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whom Putin supports. That there were Russians among them did not cause Trump to hesitate. There was no direct retaliation by the Russians to Trump\u2019s action in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>Fifth, and most importantly, Trump\u2019s nuclear doctrine took direct aim at Putin\u2019s \u201cescalate-to-de-escalate\u201d atomic strategy. Trump\u2019s Pentagon, in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/media.defense.gov\/2018\/Feb\/02\/2001872886\/-1\/-1\/1\/2018-NUCLEAR-POSTURE-REVIEW-FINAL-REPORT.PDF__;!!F0Stn7g!DVLZlU6sClGpqE9qK9Pady2R58KKXyKLP-ikL9OvKfZQC-VVVtxu3rUumRXpYOp_e36b-yec1lP2GcoH$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2018 Nuclear Posture Review<\/a>, exposed Putin\u2019s plan to detonate a low-yield tactical nuclear warhead in the theater of combat operations, such as it may decide to do in Ukraine, to deter the U.S. from intervening. As part of the modernization of the U.S. nuclear arsenal,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/nuclear-arsenal\/2020\/02\/04\/trumps-new-nuclear-weapon-has-been-deployed\/__;!!F0Stn7g!DVLZlU6sClGpqE9qK9Pady2R58KKXyKLP-ikL9OvKfZQC-VVVtxu3rUumRXpYOp_e36b-yec1sTMBERQ$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trump ordered<\/a>\u00a0the development of a low-yield nuclear-armed sea-launched cruise missile, a weapon that had been part of the U.S. arsenal until it was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/apnews.com\/article\/north-america-donald-trump-russia-ap-top-news-europe-2190cd7d1f4942408e4409a01e24c9f1__;!!F0Stn7g!DVLZlU6sClGpqE9qK9Pady2R58KKXyKLP-ikL9OvKfZQC-VVVtxu3rUumRXpYOp_e36b-yec1gHrWLZe$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">retired by the Obama administration<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s move blunted Russia\u2019s \u201cfirst-use\u201d nuclear policy, demonstrating to Putin that his plan to launch a limited nuclear war in Europe was no longer a guarantee that would prevent U.S. forces from flowing into the theater. <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2022\/03\/biden-administration-kills-trump-era-nuclear-cruise-missile-program\/\">Biden canceled Trump\u2019s program that served as a counter to Russian nuclear doctrine.<\/a> Putin, who has successfully intimidated Biden with nuclear threats, could not be certain Trump wouldn\u2019t try to face off with the Russian KGB assassin to prove whose nuclear button is bigger and more powerful.<\/p>\n<p>We will find out soon enough whether Americans want more of Trump.
