Artem Kukharenko and Alexander Kabakov, founders of the artificial intelligence company NtechLab, have resigned from their positions recently, citing disagreements with the company’s management and investors over projects in Russia. One founder left in December 2021, while the other left in March 2022, just after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. According to the founders, they wanted NtechLab to cease all work in Russia and relocate all Russia-based employees, a move which the management disagreed with. Kukharenko said that “most shareholders supported management, so we had no other option than to resign from the company.”<\/p>\n

The founders’ resignations came after Reuters published a report on the use of facial recognition technology in Russia by law enforcement officials to identify and incarcerate protesters and opposition activists. FindFace, NtechLab’s algorithm, is one of the algorithms that powers Moscow’s facial recognition system.<\/p>\n

After Alexei Navalny, an opposition leader, was poisoned in August 2020, the founders began discussing ending all projects in Russia. They said that “It became clear that the country is moving towards a disaster, although no one could have imagined that the country would start a war,” and have recently signed an anti-war petition after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The founders declined to provide further details about their recent disagreement or the reasons behind their desire to end NtechLab’s work in Russia.<\/p>\n

NtechLab did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n
