Tim Burchett from Knoxville spoke with reporters near the Capitol on Tuesday.\u00a0\u201cIt is horrendous. I lived in Nashville; I was in the state legislature for 16 years. It\u2019s just a horrible situation,\u201d he stated, then suggested that Congress could not solve the issue of mass shootings and that the nation needed to return to its spiritual roots.<\/p>\n<p>Gesturing toward the Capitol building, Burchett asserted, \u201cWe\u2019re not gonna fix it. Criminals are going to be criminals. My daddy, who fought in the Second World War, fought in the Pacific, fought the Japanese, and he told me, he said, \u2018Buddy, if somebody wants to take you out and doesn\u2019t mind losing their life, there\u2019s not a whole heck of a lot you can do about it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got a mental health issue in this country. We need to start addressing it,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n<p>When a reporter noted his closeness to the issue, since he hailed from Tennessee, Burchett responded, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what state it happens in; we\u2019re all Americans. It doesn\u2019t matter the color of their skin. They all bleed red. They\u2019re bleeding a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t see any real role that we can do other than mess things up, honestly, because of the situation,\u201d Burchett said. \u201cLike I said, I don\u2019t think a criminal\u2019s gonna stop from [getting] guns; you know, you can print them out on computer now, 3-D printing. I don\u2019t think you\u2019re gonna stop the gun violence. I think you gotta change people\u2019s hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he spoke of his belief that a return to religion was vital. \u201cAs a Christian, as we talk about in the church, and I\u2019ve said this many times; I think we really need a revival in this country,\u201d he said. \u201cI think our ministers and our communities of faith need to come together and start preaching about love from the Bible; it\u2019s in the Bible, from the pulpit, and maybe that could go a long ways towards it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, a chapel meeting at the Kentucky Christian college of Asbury University spontaneously flowered into a weeks-long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/christian-colleges-nonstop-prayer-meeting-goes-viral-students-come-from-other-states\">prayer and worship session<\/a>, inspiring students from colleges in other states to travel there just to be a part of it. The revival began on February 8, after some students decided to not leave the service, instead continuing to pray and sing. Vernon Nazarene University, among others. The revival ended 16 days later after the university announced that it was moving the revival online.<\/p>\n<p>The American founders saw the need for religion. George Washington\u2019s nephew, who served as his private secretary during the first part of his presidency, <a href=\"https:\/\/christiananswers.net\/q-wall\/wal-g011.html\">said<\/a> he saw Washington, both morning and evening, kneeling with a Bible open before him. John Adams wrote, \u201cOur constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bible was the most referenced work in the founders\u2019 political discourse,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/american-founders\/commentary\/realism-religion-and-the-republic\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0author Daniel Dreisbach. \u201cThe Bible figured prominently in the founders\u2019 political project because they thought it fostered the religion and morality essential for republican government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNumerous academic studies have demonstrated that communities with high numbers of religious adherents have lower crime rates,\u201d the Rand Corporation has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/blog\/2010\/03\/do-higher-crime-rates-cause-a-decrease-in-religiosity.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pointed out<\/a>. \u201cOther studies also find that more religious individuals are less likely to be involved in criminal behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pew Research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/religion\/2022\/09\/13\/modeling-the-future-of-religion-in-america\/\">called<\/a> the decline in religion in America an \u201caccelerating trend\u201d last September, noting, \u201cSince the 1990s, large numbers of Americans have left Christianity to join the growing ranks of U.S. adults who describe their religious identity as atheist, agnostic or \u2018nothing in particular,\u2019 adding, \u201cThe projections show Christians of all ages shrinking from 64% to between a little more than half (54%) and just above one-third (35%) of all Americans by 2070.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m idealistic, brother,\u201d Burchett concluded. \u201cI didn\u2019t come up here \u2019cause I thought I was gonna get my butt kicked. I thought I was gonna do something.
