The layoffs expected this week will precede a \u201clarger round of notifications\u201d next month and a final round \u201cbefore the beginning of the summer,\u201d Iger said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/disney-layoffs-bob-iger-memo-1235361315\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memo<\/a> obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor our employees who aren\u2019t impacted, I want to acknowledge that there will no doubt be challenges ahead as we continue building the structures and functions that will enable us to be successful moving forward,\u201d Iger told employees. \u201cIn tough moments, we must always do what is required to ensure Disney can continue delivering exceptional entertainment to audiences and guests around the world, now, and long into the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Disney shares rose 0.8% on Monday morning upon the release of the memo; the company\u2019s stock price has declined 31.7% over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>Iger commented that the layoffs would enable \u201cimportant cost-saving measures necessary for creating a more effective, coordinated and streamlined approach\u201d to the company. He said last month during an earnings call that the firm\u2019s new structure would center on \u201creturning greater authority to our creative leaders and making them accountable for how their content performs financially,\u201d according to another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/disney-restructuring-dmed-iger-layoffs-1235319661\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from The Hollywood Reporter.<\/p>\n<p>Several prominent firms have implemented headcount reductions after the increased hiring that many pursued in the wake of the lockdown-induced recession. Social media company Meta and e-commerce behemoth Amazon, for instance, announced multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/amazon-to-dismiss-thousands-more-workers-as-big-tech-layoffs-continue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">layoffs<\/a> as investors noted the influx of employees, many of whom are no longer necessary given the present economic tumult.<\/p>\n<p>Disney has also lost trust among some consumers after executives involved the firm in contentious culture war battles last year. Disney publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-desantis-torches-disney-over-opposition-to-law-banning-sexual-ideology-being-forced-on-young-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opposed<\/a> a parental rights law in Florida that bans instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity to children between kindergarten and third grade. In an exclusive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/exclusive-poll-over-60-of-americans-back-floridas-limits-on-k-3-lessons-on-sexual-orientation-and-gender-identity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a> from The Daily Wire, 64% of Americans, including 62% of Democrats and 57% of independents, nevertheless supported the law.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) subsequently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/desantis-signs-bill-giving-florida-control-over-disneys-self-governance-district\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">endorsed<\/a> a bill that revoked special tax and regulatory privileges Disney had enjoyed in central Florida. Iger, who had been replaced by Disney executive Bob Chapek for two years before he recently returned as chief executive, expressed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/new-disney-ceo-says-company-will-quiet-things-down-regrets-predecessor-battled-desantis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regret<\/a> that the company lost the special privileges, promising company leadership would more carefully listen to consumers in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was sorry to see us dragged into that battle, and I have no idea exactly what its ramifications are in terms of the business itself,\u201d he told employees in leaked footage. \u201cWhat I can say is that the state of Florida has been important to us for a long time, and we have been very important to the state of Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Disney reported a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/u-s-subscriptions-at-ultra-woke-disney-slow-to-a-crawl-after-company-loses-left-wing-political-battles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">significant slowdown<\/a> in new domestic subscriptions for flagship streaming service Disney+ after entering into the political battle.
