_bp.push({ \"div\": \"Brid_79695093\", \"obj\": {\"id\":\"27789\",\"width\":\"16\",\"height\":\"9\",\"video\":\"1269019\"} }); <\/script>               <script type=\"text\/javascript\" async src=\"https:\/\/services.brid.tv\/player\/build\/brid.min.js\"><\/script>              <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Chinese General Secretary <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/xi-jinping\">Xi Jinping<\/a>\u2019s vaunted <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/xi-leaves-meeting-with-putin-military-cooperation\">trip<\/a> to <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/russia\">Russia<\/a> represents \u201ca very dangerous sign\u201d for <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/taiwan\">Taiwan<\/a> and other democracies, according to a top Taiwanese envoy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis dramatic scene choreographed between the two major authoritarian leaders of the world, Russia and China&#8217;s merging their alliance, what that says to the world, I think, is a very dangerous sign,\u201d Taiwan\u2019s Bi-khim Hsiao, the island democracy\u2019s de facto ambassador to the United States, told a pro-democracy <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/pelosi-endorses-hague-tribunal-arrest-warrant-putin\">forum at the Capitol<\/a> this week. \u201cThat is the tolerance, or even the desire, to use force, to inhumanely attack and deprive others of their freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/politics\/why-china-props-up-putin\">WHY CHINA PROPS UP PUTIN<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Secretary of State <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/antony-blinken\">Antony Blinken<\/a> has condemned Xi for giving \u201c<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/blinken-xi-putin-diplomatic-cover-russia-war-crimes\">diplomatic cover<\/a>\u201d to Russian aggression, but Hsiao&#8217;s statement cast China\u2019s diplomatic alignment with Russia as a portent of the danger presented to Taiwan. Yet the conflict also has been perceived as a vindication of the affinity between Taiwan, menaced as it is by a Chinese Communist regime that claims sovereignty over the island, and some European governments and societies liberated by the collapse of the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call Taiwan &#8216;Taiwan&#8221; in Lithuania,\u201d said Zygimantas Pavilionis, who chairs the foreign affairs committee in the Lithuanian parliament. \u201cAnd we hope you will follow one day when you are brave enough, like us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hsiao appeared alongside a group of central European lawmakers at the annual gathering of the Kalinowski Forum, a roundtable named for a 19th-century revolutionary executed for opposing imperial Russia\u2019s control over the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/poland-ukraine-defy-putin-new-powers-europe\">late Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth<\/a>. The commonwealth once stretched across much of modern Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, and the Baltic States prior to its decline and then <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/the-scene-from-poland-on-the-edge-of-russias-war-in-ukraine\">erasure<\/a> from the map of Europe in the late 18th century.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are like litmus tests of the front lines,\u201d Pavilionis told the gathering. \u201cWe feel that something bad is happening, and that&#8217;s why we are united.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hsiao implied that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Xi have an egotistical desire to expand their territorial control. \u201cThe very inspirational defensive battle of the Ukrainian people must be a message to the world that the use of force, the use of violence, to achieve personal legacies \u2014 there is no justification for the use of violence against another country or other people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwanese officials regard their increasing contact with legislators worldwide as a valuable alternative to official diplomatic recognition. China requires any country that has diplomatic relations with Beijing to sever relations with Taipei.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at the number of delegations coming from Europe or even from the United States, it\u2019s just so many of them,\u201d Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu told the <i>Japan Times<\/i> this week. &#8220;All sorts of parliamentary delegations have visited Taiwan, and the purpose is always the same: They want to come to Taiwan, stand on Taiwanese soil, and declare that they support Taiwan in the face of the threat coming from China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lithuania has been on the leading edge of China\u2019s declining reputation in Europe in recent years. Lithuanian national security officials <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/china-lashes-lithuania-for-sounding-alarm-on-espionage\">angered<\/a> Beijing by issuing a public warning against Chinese espionage in 2019 and blocking Chinese efforts to <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/we-need-to-control-it-lithuania-resists-chinese-efforts-to-poach-key-shipping-port\">acquire<\/a> control of the Port of Klaipeda, a key port on the Baltic Sea.<\/p>\n<div id=\"dsk-banner-ad-g\"><\/div>\n<p>In 2021, Lithuania allowed Taiwanese officials to open an unofficial embassy in Vilnius, and Chinese officials retaliated with a rash of economic punishments intended to force Lithuania to defer to China\u2019s political priorities. U.S. and European officials countered with a series of initiatives to insulate the NATO and EU member from that pressure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that we need to continue to build our tools,\u201d the State Department&#8217;s chief economist, Emily Blanchard, told the Center for Strategic and International Studies on Wednesday. \u201cSo we&#8217;ve deployed a tool set that works, we think, pretty well with Lithuania. But we know that the next case will be different &#8230; and so we need to build a tool set that is agile to respond to cases of coercion as they happen in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A bipartisan pair of senators have introduced legislation intended \u201cto give the president the ability to help our foreign partners on an expedited basis,\u201d as Sen. Chris Young (R-IN) put it this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolitical and security coercion are quick to follow when economic coercion succeeds,\u201d Young told CSIS. \u201cWe empower the president with the same toolkit for Taiwan as he might apply to Lithuania or Australia or some other country. So we think the same tools apply.
