He did look me in the eye and said, \u2018No, I haven\u2019t.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then he said that he would. I said, \u2018Good, because then the next time you talk about it, you\u2019ll have a more informed opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy sparked outrage from Babbitt\u2019s family on Feb. 2 when he told Capitol reporters that Capitol Police Lt. Michael Byrd \u201cdid his job\u201d when he fired on the unarmed Babbitt at the entrance to the Speaker\u2019s Lobby on Jan. 6. (Tasos Katopodis\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>McCarthy\u2019s chief of staff approached Witthoeft outside of a House hearing on Feb. 28 and asked if she would like to have a face-to-face meeting with the Speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Witthoeft said she felt very good after the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was expecting some positive interaction because otherwise, I don\u2019t think he would have agreed to meet me,\u201d she said. \u201cI didn\u2019t want it to be adversarial. And I thought that we should both come at it with an open mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Witthoeft said McCarthy was very attentive and let her talk for 30 minutes about her daughter\u2019s killing and other Jan. 6 topics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe let me talk for half an hour and didn\u2019t interrupt me, didn\u2019t interject,\u201d Witthoeft said. \u201cI really felt like he was a gracious host.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4620458\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript> Ashli Babbitt on her final birthday, three months before she was shot and killed at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
