However, there is an abundance of evidence proving TikTok\u2019s parent company, ByteDance, is heavily controlled by the CCP, indicating the Chinese government does indeed have access to American data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A highly comprehensive report submitted to the Australian Senate revealed ByteDance is not private, but better\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cybernews.com\/editorial\/tiktok-owner-bytedance-hybrid-chinese-state-entity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">described<\/a>\u00a0as a \u201chybrid\u201d state-private entity. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., brought forward allegations that the company was overstating its separation from ByteDance.<\/p>\n<h2>2. CEO Won\u2019t Pledge to Prevent Commodification of Personal Health Data<\/h2>\n<p>When Rep. CEO Doesn\u2019t Consider Spying on Journalists Wrong<\/h2>\n<p>When Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., brought up how TikTok spied on American journalists, Chew said that he \u201cdisagree[d] with the characterization that it\u2019s spying.\u201d Last December, TikTok\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2022\/dec\/22\/tiktok-bytedance-workers-fired-data-access-journalists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">admitted<\/a> ByteDance employees used IP addresses to track the locations of two American journalists who had critically reported on TikTok. Whether Chew is willing to admit it, ByteDance employees\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/emilybaker-white\/2022\/10\/20\/tiktok-bytedance-surveillance-american-user-data\/?sh=5774faf06c2d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improperly collecting data<\/a>\u00a0on the physical movements of its users is indeed spying. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"c9zmlipCGrnUITVogwYhMPRQ\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cathymcmorris?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@cathymcmorris<\/a>: &#8220;TikTok spied on American journalists. Neal Dunn, R-Fla. \u201cI don\u2019t think that spying is the right way to describe it,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?c5063393\/tiktok-ceo-bytedance-i-spying-describe-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said Chew<\/a>\u00a0of the surveillance done on American journalists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McMorris Rodgers also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DailyCaller\/status\/1638914879674302464?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asked<\/a>\u00a0whether TikTok censors content about topics such as the Tiananmen Square massacre, an event that has historically been heavily memory-holed by the Chinese government.
