Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) is proposing to withdraw China&#8217;s permanent normal trade relations status with the United States. The bill would impose higher tariffs on Chinese imports and would allow the President to impose even higher tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>China has enjoyed &#8220;most-favored-nation&#8221; (MFN) status with the United States since 2000, after joining the World Trade Organization. It has since become one of the United States&#8217; main trade partners. Hawley claims that revoking China&#8217;s MFN status would strengthen the working class and protect American workers, citing the loss of jobs across manufacturing industries in America as evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the United States withdrew Russia&#8217;s MFN status due to its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Currently, the only other countries denied this status are Cuba and North Korea.
