In August 2020, the law school solicited applications for an associate dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion, the position Steinbach would go on to fill. A <a href=\"https:\/\/careersearch.stanford.edu\/jobs\/associate-dean-for-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-stanford-law-school-10370\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/8c647206b78779f9082f4c7ab5926cb96b531b31?url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fcareersearch.stanford.edu%252Fjobs%252Fassociate-dean-for-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-stanford-law-school-10370%26userId%3D6348687%26signature%3D7e3664b008f2afd1&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1679414756234000&#038;usg=AOvVaw3wg8zzzCN1J0M6EVNQ1Roi\">job posting <\/a>classified the role as &#8220;Grade K&#8221;\u2014a reference to the university\u2019s salary structure, which assigns each employee a letter grade corresponding to their salary range. K is among the higher grades, which range from A to P, and appears to be reserved for mid-level administrators.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ideal candidates for Steinbach\u2019s role, <a href=\"https:\/\/careersearch.stanford.edu\/jobs\/associate-dean-for-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-stanford-law-school-10370\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/84199cd8dc4e627f417b4861c0ec3ded1d070c26?url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fcareersearch.stanford.edu%252Fjobs%252Fassociate-dean-for-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-stanford-law-school-10370%26userId%3D6348687%26signature%3D97bf2a867d25e7b9&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1679414756234000&#038;usg=AOvVaw1ebEJCb1eF4EhC9PMBN79e\">the job posting said<\/a>, should have &#8220;excellent judgment and discretion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The dean\u2019s compensation is hardly atypical. The average salary for diversity professionals, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salary.com\/research\/salary\/alternate\/diversity-equity-and-inclusion-manager-salary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/e79f081c65aa8b1c7ebe0475b89df72b35f50d55?url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.salary.com%252Fresearch%252Fsalary%252Falternate%252Fdiversity-equity-and-inclusion-manager-salary%26userId%3D6348687%26signature%3D819fb8e1def85ae1&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1679414756234000&#038;usg=AOvVaw3XsMlo3O0z6ZOg00UXDTbe\">salary.com<\/a>, is $132,363, putting them in the <a href=\"https:\/\/dqydj.com\/income-percentile-calculator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/01cb51a0ffac3068080cc19c1dd2c658478e47e7?url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fdqydj.com%252Fincome-percentile-calculator%252F%26userId%3D6348687%26signature%3Df080a926214463e8&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1679414756234000&#038;usg=AOvVaw1j85K2w53B-1p41tU6MTZE\">89th percentile<\/a> of individual earners.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Stanford employs an army of these bureaucrats. The university, which accepts fewer than 4 percent of applicants, has nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/themissingdatadepot.substack.com\/p\/is-dei-destroying-free-speech-on\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/3af81ad3ccfd4f750cb0e3dcae1dacfb569db309?url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fthemissingdatadepot.substack.com%252Fp%252Fis-dei-destroying-free-speech-on%26userId%3D6348687%26signature%3Dd43d2712d8cc0fe3&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1679414756234000&#038;usg=AOvVaw1XQOnv9hWlA9AAEqeZ19p9\">12 DEI administrators for every 1,000 students<\/a>\u2014a ratio that far exceeds every other American university, including Harvard and Yale.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As Stanford has built out this bureaucracy, it\u2019s students who\u2019ve been left holding the bill: The university in February <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestcolleges.com\/news\/stanford-university-to-raise-undergraduate-tuition\/#:~:text=Along%20with%20tuition%2C%20the%20university's,this%20will%20rise%20to%20%2482%2C406.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/51117ca77a76b2efa877faf8fdb43b484a324330?url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.bestcolleges.com%252Fnews%252Fstanford-university-to-raise-undergraduate-tuition%252F%2523%253A~%253Atext%253DAlong%252520with%252520tuition%25252C%252520the%252520university's%252Cthis%252520will%252520rise%252520to%252520%25252482%25252C406.%26userId%3D6348687%26signature%3D159639f326f1b282&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1679414756234000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2u19Ybb3Lec6qGBCbbsVzE\">announced<\/a> a 7 percent tuition hike for undergraduates, who will be charged $82,406 a year beginning next year.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Though Duncan and others have called on Stanford to fire Steinbach, as of this writing she is still hanging on. So are the protesters, who by the law school\u2019s own admission violated its free speech policies. Though Jenny Martinez, the law school\u2019s dean, has said Stanford is &#8220;reviewing what transpired,&#8221; she has not indicated that any students involved will face disciplinary action.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Stanford did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Duncan, who\u2019d been invited by the law school\u2019s Federalist Society chapter, was unable to complete his talk due to the protest Steinbach helped stoke. Hecklers disrupted him nearly every other word and\u2014in the hallway before the event\u2014told the sitting federal judge that &#8220;we hope your daughters get raped,&#8221; according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/struggle-session-at-stanford-law-school-federalist-society-kyle-duncan-circuit-court-judge-steinbach-4f8da19e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/20238a64228afc0b8eebaeff950c75759f4cd7e3?url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.wsj.com%252Farticles%252Fstruggle-session-at-stanford-law-school-federalist-society-kyle-duncan-circuit-court-judge-steinbach-4f8da19e%26userId%3D6348687%26signature%3Ddf0e3a728de23c3f&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1679414756234000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2mYwjoRhfzdIWnjIPUeMuq\">Duncan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EdWhelanEPPC\/status\/1636449680044220416\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/78d4b7a06841be68fb3c224e2d5919315c200f0f?url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Ftwitter.com%252FEdWhelanEPPC%252Fstatus%252F1636449680044220416%26userId%3D6348687%26signature%3Daf482fbf6f8d0826&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1679414756234000&#038;usg=AOvVaw0aAaluLbcnMqQQall_4JPn\">Stanford Federalist Society president Tim Rosenberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Stanford eventually apologized to Duncan, writing that the protest was &#8220;inconsistent&#8221; with school policy.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Some staff members, the apology added, &#8220;intervened in inappropriate ways that are not aligned with the university\u2019s commitment to free speech.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Steinbach, though, was unrepentant. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/student-activists-target-stanford-law-school-dean-in-revolt-over-her-apology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/dd82433e2ae16d90f91d26e49c2ece85b0aa2eaa?url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Ffreebeacon.com%252Fcampus%252Fstudent-activists-target-stanford-law-school-dean-in-revolt-over-her-apology%252F%26userId%3D6348687%26signature%3D90f59a8e64ead135&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1679414756234000&#038;usg=AOvVaw3SAteyfxJepET9Byq9VqJu\">conversation with students<\/a> after the event, the well-paid diversocrat claimed that Duncan was just a provocateur trying to spark a reaction, and that he hadn\u2019t prepared a speech\u2013even though the judge was holding several pages of prepared remarks. She also said the hecklers hadn\u2019t violated Stanford\u2019s free speech policies, which bar protests that &#8220;prevent the effective carrying out&#8221; of a &#8220;public event.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Steinbach has not responded to multiple requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One group that organized the protest, the Stanford National Lawyers Guild, is now threatening further disruptions. In a statement circulated 48 hours after the event, the guild\u2019s board described the shout down as &#8220;Stanford Law School at its best,&#8221; hinting that it would use such tactics &#8220;again&#8221; if more &#8220;speakers like Judge Duncan&#8221; are invited to campus.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/winred.tomcotton.com\/tom-cotton\/tik-tok-beacon-ads?utm_source=rc&#038;utm_medium=fbads&#038;utm_campaign=bantiktok\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> \t\t\t\t \t\t\t<\/a> \t\t<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/winred.tomcotton.com\/tom-cotton\/tik-tok-beacon-ads?utm_source=rc&#038;utm_medium=fbads&#038;utm_campaign=bantiktok\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> \t\t\t\t \t\t\t<\/a> \t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That militancy isn\u2019t a new development.
