Shapiro said that the government should play a role in protecting children against abuse.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When it comes to something that&#8217;s super personal but also intersects with the culture,&#8221; Brand has two daughters, aged five and six. &#8220;I reckon that you and I would raise our kids different, you know?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I imagine,&#8221; answered Shapiro, who has four children \u2014 all under nine years old, including an unborn child. &#8220;Your kids aren&#8217;t going to Jewish day school, so yeah.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re not going there, and I don&#8217;t imagine that your children smoke cigars yet, for example,&#8221; Brand made a joke. &#8220;Mine are quite heavy smokers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shapiro quipped, &#8220;My son, I don&#8217;t know \u2014 he&#8217;s turning seven soon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Click here to watch the entire episode.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Brand then referenced a monologue from\u00a0John Oliver in which the host said a book about two male penguins raising a chick would be banned in public spaces in Florida. Brand stated that he was struck by the thought of such a book. &#8220;gentle&#8221; This is a good time for kids to learn about similar-sex relationships. &#8220;I\u00a0felt like, that&#8217;s probably precisely the type of book that would gently introduce the idea that\u00a0same-sex relationships are acceptable and ordinary and not worthy of generating conflict \u2026\u00a0that&#8217;s like a perfectly inoffensive thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u00a0felt like, that&#8217;s probably precisely the type of book that would gently introduce the idea that\u00a0same-sex relationships are acceptable and ordinary and not worthy of generating conflict \u2026\u00a0that&#8217;s like a perfectly inoffensive thing,&#8221; Brand said.<\/p>\n<p>Shapiro stated that it was one thing for parents and children to use the books, but they shouldn&#8217;t be in schools libraries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Gov. Ron] DeSantis&#8217; point, to take Florida for example, is that [such material] shouldn&#8217;t be in\u00a0public school libraries, not because parents should not be allowed to teach their kids, but because\u00a0teachers should not be allowed to teach my kids, which is a different thing \u2026 It&#8217;s my responsibility to teach my kid. It&#8217;s not the job of a teachers union employee to\u00a0teach my kid what I think are fundamental human values.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\">CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILY WIRE APP<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I guess that is a question that I&#8217;m asking you, Ben,&#8221; He continued. &#8220;Is your ultimate\u00a0position that, if you&#8217;re allowed to raise your children how you want to, other people should be\u00a0allowed to raise their children how they want to?&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The Daily Wire<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;I would say, within limits,&#8221; Shapiro responded. &#8220;For example, [we] disagree with child abuse, nobody wants\u00a0their kids to be beaten, presumably.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How you define what you think is a healthy way to raise a child is obviously pretty important, because kids can&#8217;t consent to being in that relationship with their parents,&#8221; Shapiro continued. &#8220;When it comes to, you know, some of these very dicey issues about fundamental truths, as we consider them \u2014 for example, male being male, female being female. The question is, to what sort of treatment should be available to a child, based on parental diagnosis or based on going to one particular type of therapist versus another type of therapist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would say, autonomy, but within limits,&#8221; Shapiro continued. &#8220;So, the question is always, that&#8217;s where\u00a0this sort of controversy always lies: what exactly are the limits?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brand remained firm in his belief that the government should not interfere in how parents raise their children.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Where&#8217;s the point of intervention?&#8221; Brand asked. &#8220;Where are you happy for the state or some of other set of\u00a0values to be asserted? Because for me, it&#8217;s almost at no point do I want to be told \u2014 I raise my\u00a0children how I&#8217;m going to raise my children, and I recognize that there will probably be things\u00a0that people won&#8217;t agree with. And I feel quite, almost angry, like, <em>I&#8217;m raising them<\/em>. I don&#8217;t trust\u00a0you. I don&#8217;t trust your authority.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shapiro acknowledged that parents should be able to have a lot of autonomy when raising their children. However, Shapiro said that kids should be protected from abuse and given the chance to develop life skills.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think as a general rule \u2014 as a general overarching rule of the universe \u2014 sure, because I\u00a0think parents are the ones who are closest to their kids,&#8221; Shapiro answered. &#8220;I think that the rubber meets the road\u00a0when it comes to what we perceive as child health or child wellness, raising kids in what we\u00a0would perceive as a healthy way or a way that is conducive to their future happiness. It gets very\u00a0dicey, obviously very quickly, and so I think the easiest position to take is the libertarian one, but\u00a0I&#8217;m not a libertarian, because, again, I think there&#8217;s a lot of situations where active harm can be\u00a0done to children by a parent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, there are limits,\u00a0and I think that I would draw those limits probably more closely than you would.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Click here to watch the entire episode.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Brand and Shapiro talked about their parenting styles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m protecting my kids from certain\u00a0material because I think that kids are incredibly malleable, and I think that environmental\u00a0influences actually do matter to my kids,&#8221; Shapiro outlined. &#8220;I&#8217;ve yet to find an area of human life in which\u00a0environmental impact <em>does not<\/em> matter to my kids. And so this sort of idea that your kid is going\u00a0to be who they&#8217;re going to be no matter what, and they&#8217;re going to flourish into whatever they&#8217;re\u00a0going to flourish into, and your job is to stand back and let them go, I think that that&#8217;s\u00a0irresponsible, and virtually every parent would say the same. They would just draw the lines\u00a0differently than I would.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The pair concluded the discussion by agreeing that there might have to be an agreement. &#8220;truce&#8221; These cultural issues were discussed at one point to prevent the devastation of the nation.
