The public was not made aware of this until yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chuck Callesto (@ChuckCallesto) March 17, 2023<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script type=\"text\/plain\" data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" async data-cmplz-src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>According to the utility, which is based in Minneapolis, it was reported that Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant had leaked tritium-containing water. &#8220;pose[d] no health and safety concern to the local people or the environment.&#8221; Xcel Energy said that monitoring had shown that the leaking water was being filtered. &#8220;completely confined on-site&#8221; They were not found in any drinking water nearby.<\/p>\n<p>A statement was released by the President of Xcel Energy, Minnesota and South Dakota.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>&#8220;While this leak does not pose a risk to the public or the environment, we take this very seriously and are working to safely address the situation,&#8221;\u00a0Clark stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The leak was discovered by the Monticello power plant&#8217;s groundwater monitoring system in November. It was caused by a conduit connecting two buildings. It has been draining groundwater contaminated with tritium below the legal limit, treating it and storing it.<\/p>\n<p>Xcel notified federal and state officials about the tritium water leak late November. However, the spillage was not made public until Thursday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>&#8220;If at any point there had been concern for the public safety, we would of course, immediately have provided more information,&#8221; Chris Clark, president at Xcel Energy -Minnesota and South Dakota, stated. &#8220;But we also wanted to make sure we fully understood what was going on before we started raising any concerns with the public around us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the Minnesota Department of Health, the Mississippi River was not affected. Xcel also stated that it had recovered approximately 25% of the tritium that was spilled so far and that its recovery efforts will continue. It will also install a permanent solution in spring.<\/p>\n<p>Japan is about to release large quantities of radioactive effluent clean into the ocean.
