However, these two are prominent journalists that shape our national dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;DeSantis actually called Russia&#8217;s grotesque, aggressive invasion of a sovereign country a \u2018territorial dispute.&#8217; \u2026 Astonishing. Dangerous.&#8221;\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DavidAFrench\/status\/1635474930648203269\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">French<\/a>Columnist for the New York Times<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[DeSantis] has decided that if you can&#8217;t beat the pro-Putin wing of the Republican Party, then join them. He declared that Russia&#8217;s brutal and unjustified war of aggression against a sovereign Ukraine is actually \u2018a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia\u2026'&#8221;\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2023\/03\/15\/desantis-ukraine-maga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rubin<\/a>Washington Post columnist<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;territorial dispute&#8221; Quote is from Republican Florida Governor. Ron DeSantis recently released a statement on the ongoing war in Ukraine, which our elected leaders in Washington often refer to as &#8220;Our Last Great Hope.&#8221;) What he said more fully is that &#8220;becoming further entangled in a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia&#8221; It is not a &#8220;vital interest&#8221; To the United States <\/p>\n<p>This is a common view among all those who believe that America should not be involved in yet another war abroad without a clear and significant strategic benefit. It&#8217;s not as if we have urgent problems here! French, Rubin, as well as the rest of national media, really dislike this view. It&#8217;s &#8220;pro-Putin&#8221;! It&#8217;s &#8220;astonishing&#8221;  &#8220;dangerous&#8221;!<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis should repeat it again for the people at the back. The war is essentially a territorial dispute. Russian leadership claims Ukraine, and Kremlin settlement offers are almost exclusively based on territory concessions (with some details relating to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe that Russians and Ukrainians are one people \u2026 one nation, in fact,&#8221; Russian President Vladimir Putin declared in <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/entertainment-oliver-stone-europe-russia-ukraine-3fe3ff2299994fae97825381765b831c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2019<\/a>. Some parts of Ukraine even allow for it. <em>Ukrainians <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurac.edu\/en\/blogs\/mobile-people-and-diverse-societies\/ethnic-and-linguistic-identity-in-ukraine-it-s-complicated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">You can claim this<\/a>. &#8220;Many In Eastern Ukraine Want To Join Russia,&#8221; Read a NPR headline here <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/06\/24\/534207470\/many-in-eastern-ukraine-want-to-join-russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2017<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post reported last year that at least 15% Ukrainians living in the Donbas region wanted what they saw. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/04\/15\/russia-ukraine-donbas-donetsk-luhansk-public-opinion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Join Russia<\/a>. Perhaps this is due to Russia and Ukraine being part of one nation for more than 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s true, it&#8217;s not very attractive for media nerds who like to see the war as a Marvel movie in which a villainous villain is defeated by a united and freedom-loving Justice League. But that&#8217;s not the case.<\/p>\n<p><em>It is a matter of democracy!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>*Cue Max Boot solemnly removing his little hat in reverence.*<\/p>\n<p>The truth is that it doesn&#8217;t take much for speakers to share their feelings about Ukraine and hate for Putin. It&#8217;s not as romantic as Rubin, French and co.
