Although campus leftists have been shouting at speakers for years, what occurred at Stanford law School last week was unique: A prominent university administrator condoned the students&#8217; attempt to squash intellectual diversity and even enforced it.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ducan, who was invited by Stanford Federalist Society to give a talk called &#8220;Covid, Guns, and Twitter,&#8221; Tirien Steinbach, Associate Dean at Stanford Law School, was the driver of the podium.<\/p>\n<p>Duncan requested an administrator to manage the students who were violating Stanford\u2019s free speech policies because of their heckling. Steinbach took Duncan&#8217;s place and personally chastised the student with.\u00a0<em>Preparation\u00a0<\/em>remarks. <\/p>\n<p>Steinbach spoke of their behavior in her prewritten speech. &#8220;I&#8217;m glad this is going on here.&#8221;\u00a0&#8220;The Stanford Review&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stanfordreview.org\/fire-tirien-steinbach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>\u00a0Students at the talk were shouting and holding obscene signs such as &#8220;Judge Duncan can&#8217;t find the clit.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stanford President Marc Tessier\u2013Lavigne and Stanford Law School Dean Jenny Martinez\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/law.stanford.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/letter-from-Stanford.pdf?ref=the-stanford-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apologized<\/a>\u00a0Duncan says that neither Steinbach nor the student who was inflicted has been disciplined for violating university policies they have agreed to.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stanford Review students wrote an op-ed calling on the university for Steinbach&#8217;s firing. &#8220;degrade[s] the principles of free speech [and] degrade[s] the prestige and reputation of Stanford Law School itself.&#8221; It is a good idea to get rid of Steinbach, but it will not solve the problem of the hundreds of thousands Steinbach-like administrators who have taken over universities across the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Administrators are a major problem in higher education. Administrators make it impossible for students and professors to communicate clearly. <\/p>\n<p>There are usually two types of institutions.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/the-economist-explains\/2018\/05\/08\/the-rise-of-universities-diversity-bureaucrats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">More administrators<\/a>\u00a0There is more to Yale than faculty. Yale has many other faculty.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/11\/11\/yale-now-has-more-administrators-than-undergrads-thanks-to-a-mammoth-bureaucracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">More administrators<\/a>\u00a0Unlike undergraduate students. The university bureaucrats with their seven-figure salaries are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/carolinesimon\/2017\/09\/05\/bureaucrats-and-buildings-the-case-for-why-college-is-so-expensive\/?sh=2b1ded32456a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A major factor<\/a> In the ridiculous tuition cost (which is only\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/college-costs-keep-snowballing-bidens-efforts-ease-student-debt-burden-rcna49589\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">getting worse<\/a>\u00a0Biden&#8217;s plans to bail out student loans are greatly appreciated.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Universities have been conducting research for hundreds of years and managing classrooms without the need to hire bureaucrats. Non-instructional functions were managed by faculty heads. Today, the day-to-day activities of the only people who really matter at the university \u2014 the students and the faculty \u2014 are hindered by overgrown and unnecessary university administrations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A 2015\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.vanderbilt.edu\/files\/Regulatory-Compliance-Report-Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vanderbilt study\u00a0<\/a>Federal regulatory compliance accounts for 3 to 11% of school operating expenses. It also consumes 4 to 15% of faculty and staff time. It is time-consuming and expensive to navigate the red tape universities have developed. Multiple pencil pushers must approve of dual enrollments or independent study, but the only thing that&#8217;s really required is the consent and permission of the student involved as well as faculty members.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>People like Steinbach who inject drugs are the most dangerous administrators &#8220;Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion&#8221; (DEI), into every classroom, campus activity. DEI administrators indoctrinate their students with mandatory &#8220;sensitivity&#8221; They are trained from the moment they arrive on campus. They can have an impact on department hiring decisions at some institutions. This may lead to racial restrictions that often reduce the quality of professors. According to DEI zealots:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/01\/04\/u-chicago-science-professor-under-assault-for-criticizing-no-white-men-hiring-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">If you only hire the best people, then you are part of the problem<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although the humanities have been in decline for many decades, the science, technology engineering and mathematics (STEM), fields have been affected by wokeism. This is due to the DEI head. The diversity, equity and inclusion committees within academic departments offer mandatory DEI seminars to majors who would not otherwise be exposed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A second important aspect of the problem is how partisan administrators are.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/16\/opinion\/liberal-college-administrators.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studies<\/a>\u00a0It is clear that university administrators are more left-leaning that professors, which is quite a statement. The leftist faculty is six times more than their conservative counterparts, and the conservative bureaucrats are twelve times more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The most egregious thing that university administrators did was to subject students and faculty to unscientific behavior.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/01\/18\/7-ways-absurd-campus-covid-rules-defraud-and-abuse-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Covid measures<\/a>. Students were forbidden from being normal human beings. They were forced into remote learning and defrauded of their tuition funds. They were not allowed to visit each other in dorm rooms. To ensure their obedience, they were also monitored.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Students and faculty were subject to unprofessional and ineffective vaccine, booster, and mask mandates. Some were even considered unethical.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/video\/2022\/05\/07\/ellie_puentes_union_college_kicked_for_out_for_not_taking_booster_after_adverse_reaction_to_vaccine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tossed out<\/a>\u00a0For non-compliance. Administrators also implemented compulsory reporting systems that were communist-esque. This required staff and students to report colleagues and classmates who had disobeyed the Covid edicts.<\/p>\n<p>Their handling of Covid by bureaucrats was undoubtedly the worst of all their crimes. They closed down campuses, impeded learning and made professors and students&#8217; lives miserable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Administrators&#8217; violations of higher education laws have gone unreported, and this will only make them more dangerous. Steinbach knew that she was violating Stanford&#8217;s free speech policy, but she was not fired nor disciplined. She and her coworkers will continue to exercise their power, stifle education, undermine the quality professors and close down viewpoint diversity until students, faculty, and staff demand they be expelled from campus.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p> Evita Duffy &#8211; Alfonso is a staff author to The Federalist.
