I am a lifelong conservationist, and I believe deeply in the need to protect our lands and waters and honor our obligations to Tribal Nations. Respecting Tribal sovereignty means ensuring that we are listening \u2013 really listening \u2013 to Tribal communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Haaland indicated that the Interior Department was currently reviewing existing proposals for the land-exchange. &#8220;rooted in a commitment to engagement in meaningful nation-to-nation consultation with Tribes, to protecting the national wildlife refuge system, and to upholding the integrity of ANILCA&#8217;s subsistence and conservation purposes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The decision to withdraw the deal\u00a0marks a U-turn for the Biden administration, which previously defended the\u00a0exchange in court in March 2021.<\/p>\n<p>It also comes\u00a0as President Joe Biden is facing mounting criticism from Democrats and environmental activists over his approval of a\u00a030-year oil-drilling project in Alaska.<\/p>\n<h2>Willow Project approved<\/h2>\n<p>The Department of the Interior approved\u00a0the Willow Project\u00a0on Monday, allowing oil giant ConocoPhillips to proceed with its\u00a0$8 billion project within a section of the National Petroleum Reserve.<\/p>\n<p>The company has forecast that the project will produce as much as 180,000 barrels of oil a day at its peak; marking about\u00a01.5 percent of total U.S. oil production, and\u00a0more than 600 million barrels of oil equivalent over its 30-year lifespan.<\/p>\n<p>Proponents were happy to approve the project, noting that it will boost American energy and national security, while also benefiting the community through well-paying jobs. However, opponents claim the project will negatively impact Biden\u2019s ambitious climate goals.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0joint statement, four progressive lawmakers\u2014Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ra\u00fal M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.), Jared Huffman (D-Calif.), and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.)\u2014criticized the decision, noting that Biden has &#8220;committed to fighting climate change and advancing environmental justice&#8221; and that the approval of the\u00a0Willow project &#8220;fails to live up to those promises.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a statement following Haaland&#8217;s announcement on Monday,\u00a0Alaska&#8217;s Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy is a supporter and advocate of the Willow Project.
