Gavin Newsom are pushing pharmacy retailers to continue providing customers with access to the abortion drug,\u00a0mifepristone.<\/p>\n<p>In a March 14\u00a0letter to\u00a0CVS, Rite-Aid, Walmart, Safeway, Kroger, Costco, and Health Mart, 14 Democrat governors questioned how the pharmacy giants plan to\u00a0distribute the abortion medication and &#8220;safeguard access to reproductive health care.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As companies that dispense critical, life-saving medications, we urge that your decisions continue to be guided by well-established science and medical evidence and a commitment to the health and well-being of patients \u2013 not politics or litigation threats,&#8221;\u00a0These were the governors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As you know, the FDA [Food and Drug Administration] determined more than 20 years ago that Mifepristone is safe and effective, and as health care providers, we hope you will see this attempted interference in the private market for what it is: a threat to the rights of Americans to access basic health care,&#8221; They were also added.<\/p>\n<p>The governors of California and Illinois signed the letter.<\/p>\n<p>The governors are\u00a0members of the Reproductive Freedom Alliance, a non-partisan coalition of governors aimed at ensuring access to\u00a0abortion and reproductive health care access.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere on Monday, 18\u00a0Democratic senators, led by\u00a0Sens. Patty Murray (D.Wash.), and Debbie Stabenow(D.Mich.) sent letters to seven of America&#8217;s largest retail pharmacies, asking them to make the necessary arrangements to provide the requested assistance. &#8220;strongest possible legal access to mifepristone for patients&#8221; Clearly describe their policies and plans for dispensing the drug.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5116308\"><figcaption><\/figcaption>Mifepristone, also known as Misoprostol (or Mifeprex), is a drug used in a chemical abortion. (Robyn Beck\/AFP\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<h2>Walgreens Causing \u2018Widespread Confusion&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Mifepristone works by blocking the hormone\u00a0progesterone, which is needed for a pregnancy to continue. It is used in combination with\u00a0another medicine called misoprostol to end a pregnancy up to 10 weeks after conception.<\/p>\n<p>The letter to\u00a0Walgreens, Albertsons, Costco, Kroger, Walmart, CVS Health, and Rite Aid noted that\u00a0Walgreens and a string of other pharmacy chains had said in January that they planned\u00a0to seek certification with the FDA to\u00a0distribute mifepristone in physical stores and via mail after the agency lifted certain requirements, allowing\u00a0retail pharmacies to dispense the drug to people with a prescription, provided they were certified under special safety rules.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the\u00a0regulatory change, only doctors and mail-order pharmacies or clinics were allowed to provide the pill.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats observed that Albertsons and Costco, Kroger, Walmart, and Kroger have not yet made any plans for certification.<\/p>\n<p>In a press release, senators charged Walgreens with causing the letter&#8217;s contents. &#8220;widespread confusion about its plans by appearing to cave to the threats&#8221; of Republican\u00a0attorneys general who previously sent a letter\u00a0(pdf) to the company\u00a0informing it that it risked breaking the law if it were to distribute\u00a0mifepristone by mail.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous states have now banned abortions since the Supreme Court&#8217;s June 2013 Roe v. Wade ruling.<\/p>\n<p>Walgreens subsequently responded to the\u00a0attorneys general noting that while it has publicly said it intends to become a\u00a0certified pharmacy under the FDA&#8217;s program, it has &#8220;made clear that it would do so consistent with all applicable laws and as a result would not be able to dispense Mifepristone in all locations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5099215\"><figcaption><\/figcaption>California Gov.
