Those who are vulnerable will remain vulnerable. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a separate tweet, Kirkland said that being black in school \u2014 regardless of vaccination efforts or the coronavirus \u2014 is unsafe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s not about vaccines or COVID. If you\u2019re Black, you\u2019re not safe in U.S. schools,\u201d Kirkland said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_196671\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-196671\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-196671\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Kirkland-Tweet-300x148.png\" alt width=\"600\" height=\"296\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-196671\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>via @davidekirkland\/Twitter<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>When asked to clarify what made American schools unsafe for black children, Kirkland did not respond to requests for comment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Kirkland is the Dean of Equity, Belonging, and Community Action at NYU as well as an associate professor of English and Urban Education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Multiple studies have uncovered that school closures have had a disproportionately negative impact on black and Hispanic students. According to a study by the academic non-profit<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwea.org\/content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Collaborative-brief-Learning-during-COVID-19.NOV2020.pdf\"><span>NWEA<\/span><\/a><span>, a review of fall semester test scores found that minority students were underperforming in reading, while their peers scored in pre-pandemic reading levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Megan Kuhfeld, the author of the NWEA study, told a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/news\/houston-texas\/education\/article\/Black-Hispanic-poor-students-COVID19-closures-15908407.php\"><span>local Houston publication<\/span><\/a> <span>that a greater number of minority students may be falling behind than the study can show. Kuhfeld claims that students who didn\u2019t take the assessment were from marginalized backgrounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Another<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yale.edu\/2021\/01\/05\/covid-school-closures-most-harm-students-poorest-neighborhoods\"><span>study<\/span><\/a> <span>from Yale University discovered that pandemic-related school closures are exacerbating educational inequality by impacting the academic progress of children from low-income neighborhoods. Meanwhile, the closures have had minimal impact on students from the country\u2019s richest communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Yale study observed ninth-grade students living in the nation\u2019s poorest neighborhoods, a majority of whom are racial minorities, and discovered that children who earned straight Bs \u201cpre-pandemic\u201d now would get Cs in most of their subjects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Yale research concluded that students will recover some of these learning deficits by the end of high school, but approximately half of the education gap accrued during the pandemic will persist long-term.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite the mounting evidence that school closures hurt minority students, education leaders and teacher unions across the nation have advocated for schools to remain closed. Some have gone so far as to call school reopenings a form of racism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The United Teachers of Los Angeles, California\u2019s largest teachers union,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/la-teachers-union-claims-california-is-propagating-structural-racism-by-reopening-schools\"><span>said<\/span><\/a> <span>that reopening plans were \u201cpropagating structural racism.\u201d The Chicago Teacher Union<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/chicago-teachers-union-claims-push-to-open-schools-is-racist-and-sexist-sues-to-stop-plan\"><span>said<\/span><\/a> <span>that reopening schools is a form of \u201csexism, racism, and misogyny.\u201d The Washington Teacher Union president echoed both of these sentiments and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/washington-teachers-union-president-returning-to-in-person-instruction-is-white-privilege\"><span>said<\/span><\/a> <span>that returning to in-person instruction was a form of \u201cwhite privilege.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
