Democratic National Committee<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Arizona Republican Party v. Democratic National Committee.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would not be a surprise to see the high court disagree with a lower-court ruling and leave the restrictions in place,\u201d Barnes said.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">Chief Justice John Roberts as well as Justices Brett M. Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett \u201casked tough questions of both sides,\u201d the report said, adding, \u201cIn general, the conservative justices seemed inclined to support Arizona\u2019s laws, while the court\u2019s three liberal justices indicated that courts should conduct a more searching investigation into the way seemingly neutral laws work against minority voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The voting regulations from Arizona, which are more broadly applied in other parts of the country, pertain to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dpygyUGwwas\">ballot harvesting<\/a> and the collection of ballots at the wrong precincts. One law restricts who is allowed to collect ballots cast early for delivery to polling places, and the other would toss ballots submitted to the incorrect precincts.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans argue that the laws in question uphold the integrity of elections and work to minimize fraud. Democrats claim the laws are discriminatory to minorities, though even the Biden administration has acknowledged that the two laws do <em>not<\/em>\u00a0violate a key component of the Voting Rights Act.<\/p>\n<p>In what the Post has qualified as an \u201cunusual letter,\u201d the Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/19\/19-1257\/169119\/20210216164922124_Letter%20-%2019-1257%20and%2019-1258.pdf\">said<\/a> on Feb. 16 that the U.S. Department of Justice \u201cdoes not disagree with the conclusion in that brief that neither Arizona measure violates Section 2\u2019s results test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Citing the letter, Vox <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/22286213\/supreme-court-voting-rights-act-arizona-brnovich-democratic-national-committee-republican-party\">noted<\/a> Tuesday that\u00a0\u201cthere are reasonable arguments that the Court should allow the two state laws to stand.\u201d The real concern for Democrats, the outlet stated,\u00a0is the potential for the Supreme Court to \u201c[water] down what remains of the Voting Rights Act to such an extent that it becomes virtually worthless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Election integrity in Arizona has become a focal point in the national press. On Friday, for example, a\u00a0judge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/az-judge-sides-with-senate-gop-over-audit-of-millions-of-ballots-election-equipment\">ruled<\/a> that Arizona Senate Republicans can have access to Maricopa County\u2019s 2.1 million ballots from the 2020 general election and corresponding voting equipment to perform an audit.<\/p>\n<p>Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Timothy Thomason said that the election-related\u00a0subpoenas issued by the Arizona Senate are valid and enforceable.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Republicans and the GOP-dominated Maricopa County Board of Supervisors disagreed about the accessibility of the ballots. The Senate wanted to perform an audit to address election integrity concerns from constituents, whereas the board argued the ballots, by law, were to be kept secret for 24 months following the election.
