The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2020\/p1218-overdose-deaths-covid-19.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a> Fentanyl and synthetic opioids &#8220;appear to be the primary driver of the increases in overdose deaths.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite the recent spike in opioid-related deaths, doctors have decades of experience providing treatment for this condition. Localities are loosening drug user laws, with an emphasis on long-term care over criminal prosecution. <\/p>\n<p>Vancouver, British Columbia has made it illegal to possess any hard drug if they are found in small quantities. New York City opened its first federally supervised drug injection facility in 2021. Rhode Island also became the first state with legislation to legalize safe injections. <\/p>\n<p>These more innovative methods are not yet widely accepted or implemented in the U.S. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theiacp.org\/resources\/resolution\/opposition-of-safe-injection-sites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Strongly opposed<\/a> by the\u00a0International Association of Chiefs of Police, the world&#8217;s largest association of police leaders.<\/p>\n<p>The medication-assisted therapy or replacement therapy is one method of treating the condition. It stabilizes the patient and monitors their use of similar substances. This type of treatment may last for many years.
