We&#8217;d love to have you,&#8221; Sunak spoke to Biden.<\/p>\n<p>The two leaders did not provide further details regarding the planned trip, but more information is widely expected to be\u00a0revealed in the coming days.<\/p>\n<h2>Good Friday Agreement<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0Good Friday Agreement, also known as the Belfast Agreement, is a peace agreement signed by the British and Irish governments on\u00a0April 10, 1998, in order to bring an end to\u00a030 years of violent political conflict in Northern Ireland, also known as &#8220;the Troubles&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>British and Irish prime ministers Tony Blair and Bertie Ahern and\u00a0former U.S. senator George Mitchell\u00a0(D-Maine) helped reach the agreement, which also\u00a0established the capital city of Belfast&#8217;s current government system that represented\u00a0both nationalists and unionists.<\/p>\n<p>Biden, who\u00a0often touts his Irish ancestry, has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/jun\/10\/why-joe-biden-is-so-invested-in-defending-good-friday-agreement\">longtime supporter<\/a> Of the peace deal.<\/p>\n<p>However, his visit to Belfast would come at a time when the agreement is being tested following the U.K.&#8217;s withdrawal from the\u00a0European Union on Jan. 31, 2020, commonly dubbed &#8220;Brexit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Under Brexit, special agreements were drawn up for Northern Ireland pertaining to\u00a0trading arrangements, also known as the Northern Ireland Protocol, which would\u00a0keep Northern Ireland in the European Union&#8217;s single market for goods and\u00a0ensure that a\u00a0hard border is avoided with the Republic of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>However, the protocol also created a new trade border between\u00a0the rest of the U.K. and Northern Ireland in the Irish sea, which\u00a0could lead to instability.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has been previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/uk-usa-ireland-idUSKBN2B912N\">Beware<\/a> of the critical importance of maintaining peace in\u00a0Northern Ireland following Brexit.<\/p>\n<h2>Windsor Framework Deal<\/h2>\n<p>In February, the\u00a0U.K. and EU agreed to a new Brexit deal called the &#8220;Windsor Framework&#8221; which aims to fix issues with regard to the\u00a0Northern Ireland Protocol.<\/p>\n<p>Under that agreement, trade barriers will be removed in the Irish Sea, and a\u00a0two-lane system would be used for\u00a0goods arriving in Northern Ireland from the U.K.\u2014a\u00a0green lane\u00a0for goods that will remain in Northern Ireland and a\u00a0red lane\u00a0for goods that will go to the EU, with goods in that lane being subject to checks.<\/p>\n<p>All of the U.K. will be subject to VAT and Excise Changes.<\/p>\n<p>Biden called the deal an &#8220;anonymous&#8221; at the time it was announced. &#8220;essential step to ensuring that the hard-earned peace and progress of the Belfast\/Good Friday Agreement is preserved and strengthened.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I appreciate the efforts of the leaders and officials on all sides who worked tirelessly to find a way forward that protects Northern Ireland&#8217;s place within the U.K.&#8217;s internal market as well as the EU&#8217;s single market, to the benefit of all communities in Northern Ireland,&#8221; Biden stated this in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Northern Ireland can accomplish the extraordinary when its leaders work together in common cause. And I hope \u2013 as we all do \u2013 that Northern Ireland&#8217;s political institutions are soon back up and running.
