Celibacy is a special gift of God by which sacred ministers can more easily remain close to Christ with an undivided heart, and can dedicate themselves more freely to the service of God and their neighbor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no contradiction for a priest to marry,\u201d Francis, 86, told the Argentine publication Infobae. \u201cCelibacy in the western Church is a temporary prescription. I do not know if it is settled in one way or another, but it is temporary in this sense. \u2026 It is not eternal like priestly ordination, which is forever whether you like it or not. On the other hand, celibacy is a discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked if celibacy could be reviewed, Francis referenced the Eastern Church, declaring, \u201cYes, yes, In fact, everyone in the Eastern Church is married, or those who want to. There they make a choice. Before ordination there is the choice to marry or to be celibate,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobae.com\/america\/mundo\/2023\/03\/10\/el-papa-francisco-opino-sobre-nicaragua-es-como-las-dictaduras-comunistas-o-hitlerianas-grosera\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transcript<\/a>\u00a0provided by Infobae.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, Francis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/43258\/vatican-pope-francis-not-in-favor-of-optional-priestly-celibacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">offered<\/a> a slightly different view of priests\u2019 vow of celibacy, asserting, \u201cPersonally, I think that celibacy is a gift to the Church.
