Justice might be thrust by ethics code <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/clarence-thomas\">Clarence Thomas<\/a> He and his wife <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/restoring-america\/courage-strength-optimism\/mcconnell-defends-thomas-says-democrats-trying-to-bully-him-off-supreme-court\">Ginni<\/a>Further into the political spotlight. <\/p>\n<p>These guidelines would be established by so-called independent watchdogs Project on government Oversight and Lawyers Defending American Democracy. &#8220;more stringent guidelines for recusal.&#8221; The guidelines would be so rigid that, if they had been in place last year, it might have prevented Thomas, the oldest Republican-appointed justice, from being elevated to the high courts. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court-refuses-trump-plea-to-block-national-archives-from-giving-records-to-jan-6-panel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">participating<\/a> According to a NPR report, this case involved the release of records from Trump&#8217;s administration to the House Committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol Riot.<\/p>\n<p><b><u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/courts\/democrats-ratchet-up-scotus-ethics-as-justices-cant-decide-new-rules\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DEMOCRATS RATCHET SUPREME COURT ETHICS BILLS, AS JUSTICES CAN\u2019T DECIDE ABOUT NEW RULES<\/a><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Such a provision would clearly have forbidden Justice Clarence Thomas from participating&#8221; NPR&#8217;s Nina Totenberg was involved in the 2022 case <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/03\/09\/1162324746\/outside-groups-take-a-first-stab-at-a-supreme-court-ethics-code\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas was the only dissenter in the refusal of former President Donald Trump to block disclosure of records. These records later revealed that Thomas&#8217;s spouse had communicated with Trump White House officials and she called for them to stop certification of President Joe Biden&#8217;s win in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The 27-page <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.pogo.org\/report\/2023\/Model-Code-of-Conduct-for-U.S.-Supreme-Court-Justices_03_09_23.pdf?_ga=2.202513105.1717484966.1678376778-200413945.1678376778\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Model Code of Conduct for U.S. Supreme Court Justices,&#8221;<\/a> Published March 9, mentions the term &#8220;spouse&#8221; There are 14 total times. Highlights on page 5 &#8220;certain conduct by a spouse or other close family members of a Justice would require that Justice to recuse,&#8221; According to a copy of the document reviewed by <i>Washington Examiner<\/i>. <\/p>\n<p>The report does not name justices or their spouses but Ginni Tom, a prominent conservative activist attorney, might be the most significant.
