Nearly three years after the mishandling of Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR), &#8220;they are at it again.&#8221;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/03\/opinion\/tom-cotton-protests-military.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Send in the troops<\/span><\/a><span>While the &#8220;essay&#8221; headline grabbed national attention, a second equally shameful campaign is receiving far less media attention. The Gray Lady blames Hasidic Jewish schools in corporal punishment as part of their coordinated attack upon private, faith-based educational institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Let me tell you the story: Last week, a coalition consisting of New York State Assembly members as well as state senators introduced several bills that would make corporal punishment illegal in New York. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jta.org\/2023\/03\/06\/ny\/ny-lawmakers-move-to-ban-corporal-punishment-in-schools-and-spark-a-twitter-fight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>schools statewide<\/span><\/a><span>. The proposed legislation, which was banned in public schools from 1985, would be extended to private institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So far, so good. In any school, public and private, corporal punishment is not allowed. However, the practice is still legal. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wokv.com\/news\/trending\/discipline-schools-what-you-should-know-about-corporal-punishment\/6YVBRIFQXZAA5HPB4YUQJOND5M\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>19 states<\/span><\/a><span> Across the Empire State, it is rampant. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/news\/article\/corporal-punishment-new-york-schools-17459890.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Albany Times Union<\/span><\/a><span>New York&#8217;s Education Department recorded nearly 18,000 complaints about corporal punishment in charter and public schools over the past half-decade. More than 1,600 complaints were substantiated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These bills are a response to a pressing need, and they deserve broad bipartisan support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, of the total 17,819 cases across the state, over 93% (16,671) were reported in New York City&#8217;s Public Schools system. <\/span><span>The remaining 7 percent (1,148), came from other public schools districts throughout the state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The New York Times reported on the proposals in their reportage.<\/span> <span>Framed legislators&#8217; action as a &#8220;response to its [The New York Times&#8217;] reporting of the use of slaps and kicks to keep order in some Hasidic Jewish schools,&#8221; Also known as yeshivas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The majority of reported corporal punishment incidents in public schools are attributable to yeshivas. This allows them to boast about their own reporting while also fitting into their narrative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These same documents were created less than six years ago <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/11\/nyregion\/hasidic-yeshivas-schools-new-york.html#:~:text=in%20Failing%20Schools-,In%20Hasidic%20Enclaves%2C%20Failing%20Private%20Schools%20Flush%20With%20Public%20Money,are%20unaccountable%20to%20outside%20oversight.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Times<\/span><\/a> <span>Reporters took the wood to yeshivas. In a expose of 7,000 words, they accused schools of failing to &#8220;provide an adequate education&#8221; They were also added to the list. &#8220;regularly use corporal punishment.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><span>Same article<\/span><span> They continued by stating that &#8220;over the past five years, the New York City Police Department has investigated more than a dozen claims of child abuse at the schools, records show. It is not clear whether anyone was charged in the incidents.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.p12.nysed.gov\/irs\/statistics\/nonpublic\/enrollment-by-race-and-ethnicity-nonpublic-2021-22.xlsx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>113,000 Students<\/span><\/a><span> Comparable to those enrolled in Yeshivas New York City <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schools.nyc.gov\/about-us\/reports\/doe-data-at-a-glance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>One million<\/span><\/a><span> Its public school system had a 10x higher rate. If the rate of corporal punishment were equally pervasive, it is reasonable to assume that 1\/10 of the total complaints, i.e., a number like 1,600, to have occurred at yeshivas \u2013 not &#8220;more than a dozen,&#8221; The Times<\/span> <span>reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They didn&#8217;t stop there. They published at least one book every month since September 2022. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/irp.cdn-website.com\/5d5eb7b6\/files\/uploaded\/Facts%20Bulletin%20Jan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>17 articles<\/span><\/a><span> The anniversary issue published three images that depict yeshivas as a negative place. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/irp.cdn-website.com\/5d5eb7b6\/files\/uploaded\/Facts%20Bulletin%20Jan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>September 11.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>After last week&#8217;s reporting, authors of the new legislation that bans corporal punishment refuted the Times&#8217; framing. Democratic state, one of the sponsors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JuliaCarmel__\/status\/1631310172357312518\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Senator Julia Salazar<\/span><\/a><span>Tweeted at the Times<\/span> <span>reporter: &#8220;To be clear: We introduced this bill because the law should *explicitly* ban corporal punishment in all schools. The use of physical or violent methods to ostensibly discipline students has happened in many schools. I haven&#8217;t seen any evidence of it being a pattern in yeshivas.&#8221; Democratic, another co-sponsor, was also included. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/agounardes\/status\/1631338464502317057\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Senator Andrew Gounardes<\/span><\/a><span>These remarks were repeated by a second speaker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The New York Times &#8211; The Distaste<\/span> <span>It is well-documented that Hasidic schools are popular. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/16\/opinion\/hasidic-schools-new-york.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>its editorial page<\/span><\/a><span>. For this type of advocacy, the right place is the opinion section. The news section should provide facts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Newspapers&#8217; reputation is damaged when opinion is blatantly influenced by news. Public data shows the perceptions of news media. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/reports\/american-views-2023-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Record lows<\/span><\/a><span> Gallup and Knight Foundation released numbers last month. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/02\/15\/trust-in-media-low-misinform-mislead-biased-republicans-democrats-poll-gallup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Half of Americans<\/span><\/a><span> Believe that most national news organizations are trying to mislead, misinform, and persuade their audience<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Blaming yeshivas with corporal punishment doesn&#8217;t do much to repair the Gray Lady\u2019s fragile credibility.
