The White House repeatedly insisted that America&#8217;s long-standing policy towards Taiwan was not changing. Biden said that the U.S. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/russia-invasion-ukraine-wake-up-call-taiwan-china-threat\">Taiwanese militarily would be protected<\/a> at least four times \u2014 in August and October 2021 and in May and September 2022. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/odni\">Director of National Intelligence<\/a> <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/avril-haines\">Avril Haines<\/a> This was grilled during a Thursday <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?526442-1\/us-intelligence-directors-testify-global-threats&#038;live\">Hear<\/a> before the House Intelligence Committee. The DNI stated that the U.S. position was clearly communicated by Biden. <\/p>\n<p>Rep. Chris Stewart (R UT), told Haines Thursday that &#8220;we have this policy of strategic ambiguity which has served us well,&#8221; But &#8220;I wonder if it&#8217;s not time for us to declare another policy, a new policy, and that is: We will defend Taiwan.&#8221; Stewart observed that &#8220;it&#8217;s pretty clear the president seems to think that&#8221; He reiterated his opinion that &#8220;if we&#8217;re going to deter, I think we need to be clear in saying, yes, we will defend Taiwan militarily if we have to.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Haines was asked by the congressman whether he was correct and if there&#8217;d been any changes in U.S. policy. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m obviously not in a position to comment on policy, but I certainly \u2014 I think you&#8217;re right in recognizing the president&#8217;s comments on this issue, and that that has been a pretty strong statement,&#8221; Haines said. <\/p>\n<p>Haines responded that she would agree that deterrence would be stronger if U.S. enemies such as China knew that the U.S. would defend Taiwan militarily, when Haines was asked. &#8220;In this particular case, I think it is clear to the Chinese what our position is, based on the president&#8217;s comments.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Biden took Kabul in August 2021 just days after the Taliban had taken it. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/full-transcript-abc-news-george-stephanopoulos-interview-president\/story?id=79535643\">Vowed<\/a> George Stephanopoulos stated that the U.S. would &#8220;respond&#8221; Any possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan. <\/p>\n<p>Biden argued, &#8220;We made a sacred commitment to Article V that if, in fact, anyone were to invade or take action against our NATO allies, we would respond. Same with Japan, same with South Korea, same with Taiwan.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Biden&#8217;s remarks were quickly retracted by Biden, as there has never been a mutual defense treaty.
