Angie Craig, MN who voted against the measure.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans support the legislation because it will increase penalties for those caught with these substances. They believe this will reduce their spread throughout the country. More than <a href=\"https:\/\/nida.nih.gov\/research-topics\/trends-statistics\/overdose-death-rates#:~:text=Overall%2C%20drug%20overdose%20deaths%20rose,overdose%20deaths%20reported%20in%202021.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">70,000<\/a> Each year, Americans are killed by synthetic opioid overdoses. Fentanyl is the most common cause.<\/p>\n<p>Schedule I substances are substances which have been listed in the Federal Register. &#8220;no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse,&#8221; According to the DEA. However some of the substances on the list \u2014 including marijuana, magic mushrooms, and MDMA \u2014 have been used in states that either have legalized medical use of the substances or in clinical research settings.<\/p>\n<p>According to the committee, the legislation is unacceptable. &#8220;closely tracks recommendations to Congress submitted by the Office of National Drug Control Policy in September 2021.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It would permanently place FRS into Schedule I of the<i> CSA [Controlled Substances Act]<\/i>, simplify registration processes for certain research with Schedule I substances, removing barriers that currently impede such work, and provide for exemption of individual FRS from Schedule I when evidence demonstrates it is appropriate,&#8221; The committee also added.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/467\/text?s=1&#038;r=38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Text<\/a> Certain exceptions to the legislation are provided for research purposes. The process by which fentanyl-related substance could be exempted form the list includes action by the U.S. Attorney or if it is specifically listed under another schedule. The legislation&#8217;s impact on current legitimate medical uses for FRS is unclear, but it can still be easily modified.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats seem to have their primary opposition to this bill in increasing the mandatory minimum sentencing, as they see it more as a mental issue than a criminal problem.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent National Drug Threat Assessment by the DEA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-02\/DIR-008-21%202020%20National%20Drug%20Threat%20Assessment_WEB.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Says<\/a> Most of the fentanyl imported into the USA by Mexican drug cartels is through the unsecured southern border.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Homan, the former Acting Chief of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, stated in a statement for The Daily Wire: &#8220;Fentanyl has killed more Americans than any other drug the past two years, including all drugs currently classified as Schedule 1.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This decision is the worst kind of politics and they should be ashamed and forced to explain their decision to over 100,000 American moms and dads whose families have been ripped apart,&#8221; He added.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>&#8220;From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/house-democrats-vote-against-bill-to-classify-fentanyl-as-schedule-i-drug-while-thousands-die-from-overdoses\">House Democrats vote against a bill to classify Fentanyl as a Schedule I drug while thousands die from overdoses<\/a>&#8220;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:11px\"><em>&#8220;The views and opinions expressed here are solely those of the author of the article and not necessarily shared or endorsed by Conservative News Daily&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democrats on the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted against a bill this week to classify fentanyl-related substances (FRS) as Schedule I substances \u2014 a vote that comes even as a record number of Americans are dying from those compounds every year.
