The announcement came on the heels of an anti-Dr. Seuss campaign in Virginia and President Joe Biden\u2019s pointed decision to leave out the prominent American author in his\u00a0presidential proclamation for Read Across America Day, which is celebrated on Dr. Seuss\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n<p data-qa=\"headline\">Bump argued that Dr. Seuss can\u2019t be \u201ccanceled\u201d because he\u2019s already dead, adding that the \u201cvast majority\u201d of his books are still in circulation, anyway.<\/p>\n<p data-qa=\"headline\">\u201cNo one is \u2018canceling\u2019 Dr. Seuss, a phrasing by now so detached from reality that it doesn\u2019t even make any sense,\u201d wrote Washington Post correspondent. \u201cThe author, himself, is dead for one thing, which is about as canceled as a person can get. The vast, vast majority of his books, the ones without racist images or references, will still be sold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-qa=\"headline\">\u201cIf Dr. Seuss\u2019s profile wanes a bit as a result of the attention being paid to his drawings \u2014 the only form of \u2018canceling\u2019 at play here \u2014 to whom is harm being done?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p data-qa=\"headline\">The answer, according to Bump, is the people with the messed up culture, those who are \u201cafraid\u201d of progress, those who value \u201ctraditionalism\u201d \u2014 and you guessed it, he\u2019s talking about Trump supporters:<\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\"><em>The answer, of course, is people who perceive criticism of the casual racism of the past as criticism of their own behavior or as a reminder of how the world around them is changing. It\u2019s not that some Dr. Seuss books are being taken out of rotation. It\u2019s that Seuss is a benchmark for a particular sort of American upbringing. Calling out Seuss\u2019s \u2014 infrequent! \u2014 racist imagery is therefore an attack on that view of American identity.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\"><em>It\u2019s a short hop from here to rhetoric demanding that we make America great again. This, as I\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2021\/02\/16\/cancel-culture-blends-into-victim-culture\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_14\">written before<\/a>, was always the value that Donald Trump offered to his supporters: unwinding the clock to a point in which everything was stable and unchanging and systems worked explicitly, if often unwittingly, to the advantage of White men in particular. Challenging Seuss drawings exposes the racism that usually undergirded those advantages.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\"><em>This has been an undercurrent to our political conversation for decades. It used to be that \u201cpolitical correctness\u201d was the poison undermining the United States, a phrasing that emerged in response to a limited effort to change how things were described but that eventually served as a shorthand for \u201cattacks on traditional culture.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<p data-el=\"text\">While bashing conservative Americans as backward rubes who hate change, Bump offered one sentence acknowledging that speech-policing and cancel culture can go too far, writing that some \u201cefforts to police language or actions that, intentionally or not, risk chilling people\u2019s willingness to speak frankly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bump did not provide any examples of this, nor did he acknowledge that assessing past works by current social standards is asinine, or that if we were to actually do this with all past works, we\u2019d have very little left to read or view.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">Instead, he continued to slam conservatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">\u201c[U]ntil a few weeks ago, my son didn\u2019t know this book existed.
