It was introduced by Bill Essayli (a freshman Republican assemblyman). Bonta, however, went above and beyond the simple &#8220;no&#8221; vote to block Essayli from revising and reintroducing his legislation. Bonta was allowed to present the bill during the remainder of the session because the Democratic majority didn&#8217;t intervene.<\/p>\n<p>Bonta&#8217;s move comes as violent crime including homicide or rape is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ppic.org\/publication\/crime-trends-in-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spiking<\/a> statewide. Rob Bonta, the state&#8217;s chief cop, aligns with progressive prosecutor Los Angeles&#8217;s George Gascon. &#8220;progressive&#8221; The policies led to the emergence of a <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/street-justice-los-angeles-has-become-wild-west-under-soft-on-crime-prosecutor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rise in crime<\/a>. Rob Bonta has dedicated a large portion of his resources to investigations <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/justice\/2021\/04\/bonta-attorney-general-policing-california\/\">law enforcement<\/a> Promoting and advertising <a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/attorney-general-bonta-launches-new-racial-justice-bureau-announces-virtual\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social justice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An assembly legislative staffer told the assembled <em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em> He said that in his 10 years working at the capitol, he hadn&#8217;t seen any member stop a bill being reconsidered.<\/p>\n<p>Essayli&#8217;s bill would have made it mandatory for California judges to increase the jail sentence of criminals who use guns in the commission of violent crimes. This proposal could have been partially repealed. <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201720180SB620\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017 state law<\/a> Judges have the right to refuse such dismissals &#8220;sentencing enhancements,&#8221; A new enforceable <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220SB81\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 law<\/a> Judges are required to reduce additional prison time &#8220;if it is in the furtherance of justice to do so.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Advocates for victims and law enforcement urged legislators to approve the bill. They cited murders and violence that they said were increasing due to the state&#8217;s policies. &#8220;soft-on-crime&#8221; policies.<\/p>\n<p>Essayli pointed out that gun violence predominantly affects minorities like Oakland and Bonta during his testimony. Essayli mentioned that 65% of Oakland&#8217;s murder victims in 2020 were African-Americans. He also recounted the story from a victim&#8217;s mom who stated she would never be able to heal. &#8220;if there is no justice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bonta snapped up the appeal because it struck a chord with her. &#8220;You don&#8217;t need to talk to me about mothers in Oakland.&#8221; The assemblywoman claimed then that gun violence was not as important to her constituents as the possibility of being shot. &#8220;their sons and brothers and fathers and mothers being taken away from them because of the disproportionate impact that enhancements have had on their community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Longer sentencing does not prevent crime, certainty of apprehension does,&#8221; Bonta spoke Tuesday. Reggie Jones, D., chair of the committee took aim at Essayli\u2019s credibility.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;re new, you&#8217;re a freshman,&#8221; Jones-Sawyer noted that Essayli was not grateful for the effort of the assembly. &#8220;a long, 10-year process to be able to make the justice system more just.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the Bontas were under attack when Mia succeeded her husband as Gov. Gavin Newsom (D.), named him attorney general for 2021. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcra.com\/article\/california-attorney-generals-wife-lead-committee-oversees-his-budget\/42816670\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tapped<\/a> Experts said she was tasked with overseeing her husband&#8217;s budget. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcra.com\/article\/california-attorney-generals-wife-lead-committee-oversees-his-budget\/42816670\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ethically dubious<\/a>. These two are not strangers of criticism. The couple was criticized by Rob Bonta during his tenure as a legislator.
