This facial recognition technology would greatly increase the surveillance capabilities of government agencies.<\/p>\n<p>This program was funded by Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Agency, part of U.S. Intelligence Community. The 2019 goal was described by an IARPA manager as follows: &#8220;dramatically improve&#8221; U.S. facial recognition software &#8220;scaling to support millions of subjects.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>FBI &#8220;committed to responsible use of facial recognition technology ensuring it appropriately respects individuals&#8217; privacy and civil liberties,&#8221; In a statement, the bureau informed the Post. The Daily Wire asked the Department of Defense for clarification but did not receive it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Capitol Hill has been alarmed at the research on facial recognition technology. Massachusetts Democratic Senator Ed Markey introduced Tuesday legislation that would ban the government&#8217;s use of facial recognition technology. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextgov.com\/technology-news\/2023\/03\/lawmakers-intro-bill-ban-government-use-facial-recognition\/383691\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nextgov<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The year is 2023, but we are living through 1984. The continued proliferation of surveillance tools like facial recognition technologies in our society is deeply disturbing,&#8221; Markey stated this in a statement. &#8220;Biometric data collection poses serious risks of privacy invasion and discrimination, and Americans know they should not have to forgo personal privacy for safety. As we work to make our country more equitable, we cannot ignore the technologies that stand in the way of progress and perpetuate injustice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bipartisan concerns about government facial recognition technology use are common. Republican Rep.
