Tommy Tuberville\u00a0(R-Ala.) about any worries he has about TikTok&#8217;s influence on kids in America,\u00a0Nakasone responded: &#8220;TikTok concerns me for a number of different reasons. One is the data that they have.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Secondly is the algorithm and the control, who controls the algorithm. Third is the broad platform influence operations, as we talked about previously. It&#8217;s not only a fact that you can influence something, but you can also turn off the message as well when you have such a large population of listeners,&#8221; Nakasone spoke.<\/p>\n<p>The Defense Department&#8217;s NSA has responsibility for U.S. communications intelligence and security.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok, which is owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, has soared in popularity over the years and is now used\u00a0by more than 100 million Americans.<\/p>\n<p>However, Washington has repeatedly raised concerns that the app\u00a0poses a threat to national security, with American user data potentially being used\u00a0by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).<\/p>\n<h2>Increased Government Power for TikTok Ban<\/h2>\n<p>There are also concerns that the\u00a0recommendation algorithm on the app may be used to manipulate what users see as part of\u00a0influence operations.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the White House ordered that\u00a0TikTok be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/white-house-orders-tiktok-purge-from-government-devices_5087712.html\">removed from all\u00a0government devices<\/a> and systems within 30 days, although there are exceptions in cases of\u00a0national security, law enforcement, or security research activities.<\/p>\n<p>Nakasone&#8217;s remarks came the same day that\u00a0Sens. John Thune and Mark Warner, both Democrats from Virginia. led a\u00a0group of 12 bipartisan senators in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warner.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/pressreleases?id=A60981F5-0DB9-45E9-BF96-150C22E45B61\">introducing legislation<\/a> intended to\u00a0expand the federal government&#8217;s power in order to ban TikTok and other foreign-owned entities from operating in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The bill, also known as the Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information and Communications Technology (RESTRICT) Act,\u00a0would increase the Commerce Department&#8217;s power to review and prevent\u00a0information communications and technology transactions from\u00a0tech companies that are owned by six adversarial foreign nations:\u00a0China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Congress needs to stop taking a piecemeal approach when it comes to technology from adversarial nations that pose national security risks,&#8221;\u00a0Thune made the statement Tuesday.\u00a0&#8220;Our country needs a process in place to address these risks, which is why I&#8217;m pleased to work with Senator Warner to establish a holistic, methodical approach to address the threats posed by technology platforms \u2013 like TikTok \u2013 from foreign adversaries. This bipartisan legislation would take a necessary step to ensure consumers&#8217; information and our communications technology infrastructure is secure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>TikTok Responses to Your Concerns<\/h2>\n<p>TikTok denies that its user data and information can be accessed by the Chinese regime or that its content can be manipulated and says it\u00a0stores U.S. user data on servers outside of China.<\/p>\n<p>The company has also urged the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States\u00a0(CFIUS)\u00a0to finalize a\u00a0national security agreement that would allow it to continue operating in the United States in exchange for solutions that would address national security concerns.<\/p>\n<p>A TikTok spokeswoman told Reuters that the company had been working\u00a0with the U.S. government to address national security concerns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The swiftest and most thorough way to address any national security concerns about TikTok is for CFIUS\u2014of which the Department of Defense and the NSA are a part\u2014to adopt the proposed agreement that we worked with them on for nearly two years,&#8221; Brooke Oberwetter, TikTok&#8217;s representative in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Oberwetter added that\u00a0TikTok&#8217;s &#8220;status has been debated in public in a way that is divorced from the facts of that agreement and what we&#8217;ve achieved already.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>TikTok Chief Executive Shou Zi Chew is set to testify before the\u00a0House Energy and Commerce Committee on March 23 about the app&#8217;s privacy and\u00a0data security practices as well as its impact on children.<\/p>\n<p>The Epoch Times reached out to TikTok in order for comments.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> &#8230;..<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p> &#8220;Continue reading More from&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/senior-intelligence-official-warns-of-tiktoks-influence-on-us-citizens_5107541.html?utm_source=partner&#038;utm_campaign=conservnewsd\">Senior Intelligence Official Warns of TikTok&#8217;s Influence on US Citizens<\/a>&#8220;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:11px\"><em>&#8220;The views and opinions expressed here are solely those of the author of the article and not necessarily shared or endorsed by Conservative News Daily&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Paul Nakasone from the U.S. National Security Agency stated that he was concerned by what Chinese-owned TikTok data may have been collecting about users, and whether it might influence American children.
