A hearing is underway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Massey is accused of sending out photos, videos, and messages about a police-involved shooting that took place on the city\u2019s south side in early August. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2020\/08\/10\/chicago-looters-riot-magnificent-mile\/\">According to the Washington Post<\/a> and Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown, \u201cofficers responded to a call about a man with a gun in the Englewood area; once spotting the man, they pursued him on foot. After the man shot at them, police said, the officers returned fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Word of the shooting spread on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media outlets, but with the incident cast as the killing of an unarmed black man similar to other incidents that nationwide outrage. The posts reportedly encouraged residents of Chicago\u2019s south and west sides to go north, to the Magnificent Mile, and loot luxury retail stores in response to the shooting.<\/p>\n<p>The ensuing riots left Chicago\u2019s Mag Mile decimated and, months later, retailers still have not recovered. The city estimates that the looters did more than $66 million in damage, <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.cbslocal.com\/2020\/08\/03\/2-months-after-looting-and-unrest-many-chicago-businesses-still-need-help-rebuilding\/\">according to CBS Chicago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Federal prosecutors say Massey sent out a post that called on residents of the \u201csouth side, east side, or west side\u201d to head downtown and \u201cbring ya tools.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>ATTENTION ATTENTION LOTTING START AT 12 am tonight \u2026 WE WILL NOT BE F\u2014\u2014\u2014 UP THE SOUTH SIDE EAST SIDE OR WEST SIDE<br \/>DOWNTOWN AREA AND UP NORTH AREA ONLY BRING YA TOOLS SKI MASK AND GLOVES<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The post, prosecutors told a Chicago federal judge, \u201cwas instrumental in instigating what was very destructive activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The looting became a flashpoint for anti-racism and anti-police brutality protests, with many, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/this-is-reparations-blm-chicago-defends-looting-holds-rally-for-protesters-arrested-in-sundays-riots\">including the local branch of the official \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d movement<\/a>, looking to tie the August riots and looting to a larger fight against injustice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t care if someone decides to loot a Gucci or a Macy\u2019s or a Nike store, because that makes sure that person eats,\u201d one activist, affiliated with BLM Chicago said at the time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcchicago.com\/news\/local\/black-lives-matter-holds-rally-supporting-individuals-arrested-in-chicago-looting-monday\/2320365\/\">per NBC Chicago<\/a>. \u201cThat makes sure that person has clothes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is reparations,\u201d she continued. \u201cAnything they wanted to take, they can take it because these businesses have insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The organization also claimed looters were \u201ctaking reparations from corporations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot disagreed, calling the actions, \u201ccriminal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was brazen and criminal looting and destruction,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is not anywhere near acceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chicago Police Superintendent Brown agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was not an organized protest.
