Matamoros is in northeastern Tamaulipas, home to the warring Gulf drug cartel factions. It is located just south of Brownsville in Texas. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Shortly after crossing into Mexico, unidentified gunmen shot the passengers of the vehicle,&#8221; A statement was read by the U.S. Embassy Mexico City. &#8220;The gunmen herded the four U.S. citizens into another vehicle and fled the scene with them.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The following are some examples &#8220;innocent&#8221; U.S. authorities say a Mexican citizen was killed in the attack.
