But that didn&#8217;t stop Rep. Hakeem Jefferson (N.Y.), defending Biden\u2019s change in stance.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/winred.tomcotton.com\/tom-cotton\/claim-yours-ots-fbeacon-ads-30?utm_source=rc&#038;utm_medium=fbeaconads&#038;utm_campaign=2023marchots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> \t\t\t\t \t\t\t<\/a> \t\t<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/winred.tomcotton.com\/tom-cotton\/claim-yours-ots-fbeacon-ads-30?utm_source=rc&#038;utm_medium=fbeaconads&#038;utm_campaign=2023marchots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> \t\t\t\t \t\t\t<\/a> \t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Asked Sunday morning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/05\/politics\/hakeem-jeffries-dc-crime-law-cnntv\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN interview<\/a> Biden &#8220;pulled the rug out from under House Democrats&#8221; Jeffries signed the Republican bill after he said he would. &#8220;Not at all.&#8221; Jeffries is at odds with many of his fellow members. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/03\/04\/biden-dc-crime-veto-house-democrats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attacked Biden<\/a> D.C. would be prevented from lowering penalties in carjackings and illegal gun possession offenses. Biden voiced opposition to the bill by writing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/SAP-H.J.-Res.-24-and-H.J.-Res.-26_PDF.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">February statement<\/a>\u2014prompting at least 14 vulnerable House Democrats to vote against it\u2014only to reverse his position weeks after the vote.<\/p>\n<p>Now those members who are most vulnerable will be the targets of soft-on-crime attacks ads from Republicans. A fate that they might have avoided if Biden would have communicated his position before voting. &#8220;People are rip roarin&#8217; pissed,&#8221; A House Democrat told <em>Axios<\/em>. Biden &#8220;is going to have a much harder time asking people to take tough votes after this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS\/status\/1631392285182009376?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">used<\/a> His eventual support of the Republican bill was to show himself tough on crime. This tactic comes at a time when Republicans all across the country are hammering him. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2022\/09\/11\/united-states-major-cities-violent-crime-homicides-survey\/8060734001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rising violent crime rates<\/a>. Biden\u2019s determination to defeat those attacks seems to have outweighed his continued support for D.C. Statehood and Home Rule, which would permit the city to make laws without any congressional approval. Biden will be running for president in 2020. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/51for51\/status\/1232259232579366913?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> He supports D.C.&#8217;s statehood &#8220;for the last 28 years,&#8221; Democrat&#8217;s government a year later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/04\/20\/biden-administration-backs-dc-statehood-urges-swift-action-as-house-prepares-to-vote-on-bill.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urged Congress<\/a> To &#8220;provide for a swift and orderly transition to statehood.&#8221; &#8220;This taxation without representation and denial of self-governance,&#8221; The administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/dc-politics\/biden-dc-statehood-position\/2021\/04\/20\/31b86b92-a1e3-11eb-85fc-06664ff4489d_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> At the time &#8220;is an affront to the democratic values on which our nation was founded.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jeffries chose to defend Biden\u2019s bill handling, but his fellow Republicans are already feeling the heat over the decision they made to respect the pre-vote position of the president. Last week, the National Republican Congressional Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/nrcc.org\/2023\/03\/03\/how-does-sykes-feel-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">singled out<\/a> Swing-district House Democrats voted against the crime bill, asserting that it proves they are members of the House &#8220;represent the extreme pro-crime fringe of [their] party.&#8221; Targets were Democratic Reps. Abigail Spanberger in Virginia, Gabe Vasquez in N.M., Susan Wild (Pa.) and Steven Horsford from Nevada. They all voted. &#8220;coddle violent criminals,&#8221; A move by their constituents &#8220;will be hearing about \u2026 over and over again,&#8221; The committee stated.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffries didn&#8217;t respond to a request for comments. Jeffries wasn&#8217;t content with defending Biden, but he did so in an effort not only to alienate the swing-district House Democrats. Also, the caucus had a progressive wing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/democrats-vent-over-biden-position-on-dc-crime-law-2023-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blasted the president<\/a>\u00a0For siding with Republicans in criminal justice reform, refusing D.C. &#8220;conduct its own business.&#8221; &#8220;It&#8217;s actually very infuriating that the president did that,&#8221; Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D., N.Y.) told <em>Insider<\/em>. &#8220;If the president supports D.C. statehood, he should govern like it,&#8221; Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D. N.Y.), was included in an addition on Thursday <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AOC\/status\/1631502407132672001?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1631502407132672001%7Ctwgr%5E6501e569b1ef693174d8ca642670bd30aad38973%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.businessinsider.com%2Fdemocrats-vent-over-biden-position-on-dc-crime-law-2023-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The city council voted Monday in favor of Biden&#8217;s promise to sign legislation to repeal D.C.&#8217;s criminal code modifications. <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/dc-withdraws-controversial-crime-bill-after-biden-says-hed-kill-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">withdraw those changes<\/a>Phil Mendelson, chairman of the decision council (D.), stated that it was directed at &#8220;lowering the heat and lowering the rhetoric.&#8221; However, Senate Republicans dismissed Mendelson\u2019s actions, and stated that they are moving ahead with their vote to stop the new criminal code which was passed by the D.C.
