They said it would eliminate basic security protocols that states have in place and interfere with the ability of states to determine the qualifications and eligibility of voters, not allow citizens to participate and speak freely in the political process, and fail to\u00a0ensure the accuracy of voter registration lists.<\/p>\n<p>House Rules Committee Ranking Member Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.) called the title of the bill a misnomer during a committee meeting on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said this bill\u2019s title is a misnomer because I do not believe this bill has anything to do with the American people,\u201d\u00a0Cole said. \u201cThis is a bill that\u2019s about preserving the present Democratic majority. It is a bill by the majority, for the majority, and is intended to entrench the majority in power for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to a Congressional Research Service report, \u201cThe Rules Committee is instrumental in recommending procedures for considering major bills and may propose restrictions on the floor amendments that Members can offer or bar them all together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other House Republicans, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), have recently voiced their opposition to the sweeping election reform bill, which they say is a power grab by Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3631882 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/collage-Pelosi-and-McCarthy-1200x684-1.jpg\" alt=\"collage - Pelosi and McCarthy\" width=\"640\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(Left) Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) talks to reporters in Washington, on Oct. 1, 2020. (Tasos Katopodis\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American public has the most to lose because we would lose our freedom,\u201d McCarthy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/mccarthy-hr-1-bill-election-confidence-reform-bill-pelosi-power-grab\">said on Fox News\u2019 \u201cSunday Morning Futures<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you put a bill into Congress, the majority party reserves the first numbers. This is H.R. 1, so this is most important for Nancy Pelosi to hold on to her power,\u201d he added, referring to the Democratic House Speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the many provisions in HR. 1 include requiring that states implement\u00a0early voting,\u00a0automatic voter registration,\u00a0same-day registration, and online voter registration, restore the ability of felons to vote, implement no-fault absentee balloting, as well as mandating 15 days of early voting.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation would also require states to automatically register all adults, regardless of citizenship status, from state and national databases, would end voter ID requirements, and mandate that states accept absentee ballots up to 10 days after an election.<\/p>\n<p>Many states, including key\u00a0battleground states, are making an effort to reverse voting rules put in place due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/giving-the-right-name-to-the-virus-causing-a-worldwide-pandemic-2_3277200.html\">CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus<\/a> pandemic in the wake of numerous voting irregularities found during the Nov. 3, 2020, presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the questions voters have about the lack of integrity in the voting process have come from the\u00a0expanded\u00a0mail-in voting, early voting, relaxation of verification rules, and extensions to ballot receipt deadlines.<\/p>\n<p>In order to address these concerns from Republican voters in states like Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Arizona, lawmakers are trying to enact legislation to shore up areas where voters see potential for fraud created by relaxed voting rules.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, House Democrats unanimously support H.R. 1,\u00a0saying it\u00a0will expand voting rights and \u201cclean up corruption\u201d in politics.<\/p>\n<p>Stacey Abrams, a former Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate and founder of voting rights nonprofit Fair Fight Action, said at a House committee hearing on the For The People Act on Feb. 25 that there was no voter fraud and the laws being introduced by state officials are not to improve election integrity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lie cloaked in the seductive appeal of election integrity has weakened access to democracy for millions by promoting voter suppression,\u201d said Abrams.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), a lead sponsor of H.R. 1, called the Republican efforts \u201canti-democratic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s an explosion of Republican activity, governors, and legislatures across the country, working to pass bills to keep people from voting,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/zox-news.com\/republicans-are-pushing-a-wave-of-voter-restrictions-democrats-top-priority-would-stop-them\/\">said Merkley<\/a>. \u201cTo me, this is entirely anti-democratic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Georgia, which went to President Joe Biden by a narrow margin, the Senate passed legislation\u00a0that would mandate that voters submit\u00a0photocopies of voter identification documents for absentee ballot applications.<\/p>\n<p>In Pennsylvania, lawmakers have said they will repeal the state\u2019s 2019 \u201cno-excuse\u201d mail-in voting system.<\/p>\n<p>Republican state Sens. Patrick Stefano and Doug Mastriano last month said in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/Legis\/CSM\/showMemoPublic.cfm?chamber=S&#038;SPick=20210&#038;cosponId=34277\">a Senate memorandum<\/a>\u00a0that they \u201cintend to introduce legislation repealing the no-excuse mail-in ballot provisions\u201d put in place two years ago.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Lofgren_Davis_Election-hearing-1200x696-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy wp-image-3211232 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" alt=\"(L) House Administration Committee chairperson Rep. (Alex Wong\/Getty Images).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy removing the provisions of law that allow for no-excuse mail-in ballots, we can regain some trust in our elections\u2019 integrity,\u201d the senators wrote.<\/p>\n<p>House Administration Chair Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) told her colleagues during a Monday Rules Committee meeting that the state lawmakers\u2019 legislation will lead to voter suppression and that H.R. 1 guarantees everyone has access to voting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStates are now introducing suppressive voter legislation at an alarming rate, bills that if they were to become law would almost certainly disenfranchise voters with the pretext of election integrity,\u201d said Lofgren.<\/p>\n<p>H.R. 1 is expected to be debated on the House floor this week.<\/p>\n<p>Top sponsors of the bill said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.speaker.gov\/newsroom\/1421-2\">Jan. 4 press statement<\/a>\u00a0that H.R. 1 is an \u201canti-corruption\u201d bill introduced to fight voter suppression, gerrymandering, and \u201cspecial-interest dark money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cH.R. 1 will protect the right to vote, ensure the integrity of our elections, hold elected officials accountable and end the era of big, dark, special-interest money in our politics,\u201d said Pelosi, Lofgren, and Democracy Reform Task Force Chair Rep.
