Opposing the Washington, D.C., crime law<\/b> <\/p>\n<p>In one of his most recent major splits with Democrats, Manchin <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/joe-manchin-oppose-crime-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signaled<\/a> that he would vote with Republicans to rescind a <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/dc-statehood-lax-crime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">major new crime bill<\/a>, which would reduce the sentence of some violent crimes. <\/p>\n<p>It is not something I support. I mean, I want to put people away, I don&#8217;t want to let them out,&#8221; Manchin said of the new law in an appearance on CNN. &#8220;I haven&#8217;t been briefed on it, but what I know about it, I would vote to rescind it.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>His siding with Republicans on the issue all but ensured that the law would pass through the Senate. Coupled with President <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe Biden&#8217;s<\/a> pledge to sign the bill, the decision by the Council of the District of Columbia is all but dead in the water. <\/p>\n<p>Aside from conflicting with more liberal views on criminal justice, Democrats viewed the bill as crippling the push to establish Washington, D.C., as a state. <\/p>\n<p><b>2. Challenging Biden&#8217;s ESG investing rule<\/b> <\/p>\n<p>In February, Manchin and 48 Republican senators <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/restoring-america\/faith-freedom-self-reliance\/nearly-50-senators-introduce-challenge-to-biden-esg-investing-rule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced<\/a> a measure that would cancel a Biden administration rule that allows fiduciaries to weigh the environmental, social, and corporate governance factors, commonly known as <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/esg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESG<\/a>, when making investment decisions for retirees&#8217; 401(k) accounts. He derided the decision by the Biden administration as &#8220;irresponsible&#8221; and warned that it could jeopardize citizens&#8217; retirement savings <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At a time when our country is already facing economic uncertainty, record inflation, and increasing energy costs, it is irresponsible of the Biden administration to jeopardize retirement savings for more than 150 million Americans for purely political purposes,&#8221; he <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.capito.senate.gov\/news\/in-the-news\/manchin-capito-lead-50-senators-in-bipartisan-challenge-to-biden-rule-politicizing-americans-401ks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a statement. I am proud to support this bipartisan resolution that will prevent the ESG rule from threatening retirement incomes, and to protect hard-earned savings for American families.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><b>3. Opposing a planned ban on gas stoves<\/b> <\/p>\n<div id=\"dsk-banner-ad-g\"><\/div>\n<p>Manchin <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/restoring-america\/faith-freedom-self-reliance\/manchin-cruz-bill-block-gas-stove-ban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">partnered with<\/a> Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) to block an effort by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, introduced in January, that would ban gas stoves in homes. The move from Manchin and Cruz was preemptive because the agency hadn&#8217;t introduced any measures, but the two articulated fears that the government could ban an appliance <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/three-times-joe-manchin-teamed-republicans-ahead-2024-decision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">used in<\/a> an average of 35% of homes. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The federal government has no business telling American families how to cook their dinner, which is why Sen. Cruz and I introduced bipartisan legislation to ensure Americans decide how to cook in their own homes,&#8221; Manchin <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.senate.gov\/2023\/2\/sens-cruz-manchin-introduce-bipartisan-bill-to-stop-the-federal-government-from-banning-gas-stoves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in a statement<\/a>. The gas stove that we use to cook is what will be the last thing in our home. I can assure you, this. And the Consumer Product Safety Commission won&#8217;t let me forget it.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><b>4. Calling for a full investigation into Biden&#8217;s mishandling of classified documents<\/b> <\/p>\n<p>Manchin was one of a few Senate Democrats who <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/democrats-openly-call-for-investigation-into-biden-documents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called for a full investigation<\/a> into Biden&#8217;s mishandling of classified documents. Most Senate Democrats were content to paint the situation as simply a distraction from former President Donald Trump&#8217;s mishandling, but Manchin went so far as to call Biden&#8217;s behavior &#8220;extremely irresponsible and disturbing.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The reports about President Biden&#8217;s mishandling of classified documents are extremely irresponsible and disturbing,&#8221; Manchin <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/senate-democrats-support-full-investigation-biden-document-scandal-irresponsible-disturbing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Fox News<\/a>. Supporting Brett Kavanaugh&#8217;s nomination to the Supreme Court<\/b> <\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Manchin broke with Democratic Party dogma in <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/joe-manchin-breaks-with-democrats-declares-support-for-brett-kavanaugh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declaring his support<\/a> for Justice Brett Kavanaugh&#8217;s nomination to the Supreme Court amid sexual assault allegations. Attempting to block Kavanaugh from the Supreme Court was a cause celebre of Democrats, making it one of Manchin&#8217;s most significant splits. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have reservations about this vote given the serious accusations against Judge Kavanaugh and the temperament he displayed in the hearing,&#8221; Manchin said at the time. &#8220;And my heart goes out to anyone who has experienced any type of sexual assault in their life. All of my information, which includes the FBI report recently completed, has shown me that Judge Kavanaugh will be a competent jurist. I believe he will adhere to the Constitution and make decisions based upon the legal findings.
