The award is given to \u201ca film that serves as an example for other movies to follow,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/movies\/news\/aafca-awards-will-smith-accepts-beacon-award-for-emancipation\/ar-AA1899VV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> AAFCA\u2019s Gil L. Robertson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Emancipation\u2019 was the most individual difficult film of my entire career,\u201d Smith said. \u201cIt\u2019s really difficult to transport a modern mind to that time period. It\u2019s difficult to imagine that, that level of inhumanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith claimed that he was not supposed to be spit on during the scene and that the actor just decided to do it. Smith did not name the actor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the second day of shooting and 110 degrees,\u201d he said. \u201cI was in a scene with one of the white actors, and we had our lines, and the actor decided to ad-lib. So, we\u2019re doing the scene. I did my line. He did his line. And then he ad-libbed and spit in the middle of my chest. If I had pearls on, I definitely would\u2019ve clutched them. I wanted to say, \u2018Antoine,\u2019 but I stopped, and I realized that Peter couldn\u2019t have called the director.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sat there, and I took a deep breath, and we did take two, and the actor felt that the ad-lib had gone well. So, we do take two. I do my line. He does his line and spits in the middle of my chest again. I just held in that moment, and there was a part \u2014 it makes me teary right now \u2014 there was a part of me that was grateful that I got to really understand.
