Has our elite establishment&#8217;s obsession with all things related to racial and sexual minorities \u2014 and, by extension, an ideology defined by victimhood narratives \u2014 made the <em>Actual <\/em>Are the celebratory events on our calendar more trite and boring than they should be? Maybe February feels less special because it seems like every month is Black History Month.<\/p>\n<p> Diversity and Inclusion over-Saturation <\/p>\n<p>Many places are showing signs of cultural diversity and inclusion saturation. Given the way that Northern Virginia&#8217;s grocery stores have promoted Pride Month and Asian-American\/Pacific Islander Month, I expected to see a huge celebration of black culture, cuisine, black-owned businesses, and other aspects of black culture. Surprise, surprise! <em>Nothing<\/em> In my local grocery shop to celebrate Black History Month, it was all Valentine&#8217;s Day product selling.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Also, I expected to see a significant increase in coverage and celebration of Black History Month in The Washington Post as well as other corporate media. It could be a major insert in the printed edition, or a separate page on the website. But no \u2014 the Post&#8217;s &#8220;Race in America: History Matters&#8221; Series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/pr\/2023\/02\/01\/new-washington-post-live-race-america-history-matters-programming-black-history-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declared<\/a> It would dedicate February&#8217;s programming for Black History Month. However, it would do so with a series that is already titled. &#8220;Race in America,&#8221; What exactly was it that made the difference? The New York Times website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/01\/learning\/lesson-plans\/black-history-month.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Featured<\/a> &#8220;Recent and archival articles, essays, photographs, videos, infographics, writing prompts, lesson plans and more,&#8221; To honor Black History Month. The Times says that we do this all the time, every day. Just look at what we have done in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Corporate media commentary about Black History Month has become increasingly hostile and shrill in recent years. &#8220;How \u2014 and how not \u2014 to celebrate Black History Month: Let&#8217;s have less virtue signaling, hypocrisy, and misidentifying of Black people this year, OK?&#8221; The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2022\/01\/30\/opinion\/how-how-not-celebrate-black-history-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Title of the 2022 column in The Boston Globe<\/a>. There is an a &#8220;White Leech on Black History Month,&#8221; Cole Arthur Riley, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2022\/03\/02\/thank-goodness-black-history-month-is-over\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WaPo Op-ed from last year<\/a>. An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/02\/05\/black-history-month-corporations-pandering-racial-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WaPo&#8217;s opinion was titled the year before.<\/a>: &#8220;I don&#8217;t need or want corporations celebrating Black History Month.&#8221; An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/teaching-learning\/opinion-where-do-white-people-belong-in-black-history\/2022\/02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Education Week: Article from the last year<\/a> He urged whites not to make themselves the center for Black History Month. Translation: We are able to shame you for celebrating Black History Month.<\/p>\n<p> Every month, it&#8217;s about race and racism <\/p>\n<p>All of our elite institutions \u2014 not only corporate media,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No wonder the national celebration of Black History Month this year feels subdued.
