This comes at a time when the secretary is widely criticised for his handling of the East Palestine train derailment, Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>Buttigieg used departmental planes, the inspector general&#8217;s office said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/OSTs-Compliance-With-Federal-Policies-and-Procedures-for-Executive-Travel-on-DOT-Aircraft-2-27-23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Memo<\/a> It determines whether the department is eligible for funding. &#8220;complied with Federal regulations, policies, and procedures regarding executive travel on DOT aircraft.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Marco Rubio, Republican Senator from Florida, requested an audit in December 2022. It was suggested that Buttigieg had misused government resources by more than a dozen flights on government-owned jets.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Taxpayers should pay no more than necessary for your transportation,&#8221; Rubio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/press-releases?ID=9781A021-2316-403F-A8FA-B8DEA428CAF2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A letter was sent to you<\/a> Eric Soskin, the inspector general of the department.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Buttigieg flew on 18 Federal Aviation Administration jets to go on official trips that cost $41,905.20. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/transportation\/2023\/02\/27\/buttigieg-faa-planes-travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/transportation\/2023\/02\/27\/buttigieg-faa-planes-travel\/&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1677688134422000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2217Yf16hzRcRVq8GT1v2H\">The office of the secretary<\/a> The <em>Washington Post<\/em>. The department claimed that private travel was cheaper than commercial flights in every instance except one.<\/p>\n<p>This investigation comes as Buttigieg is under fire for the delayed response of his department to the train derailment, and subsequent toxic chemical release into East Palestine, Ohio. He took nearly two weeks to admit the crisis, and three weeks to travel to East Palestine. In January, all commercial flights were grounded by a programming error at Federal Aviation Administration, part of the Transportation Department.
