Since the day\u2019s establishment, presidents as disparate as Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Donald Trump have mentioned the author in their comments about the day.<\/p>\n<p>Not this year. After Virginia\u2019s largest school district, Loudoun County Public Schools, removed Dr. Seuss from its Read Across America Day celebration, President Biden left out any mention of the author from his proclamation.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/oh-the-places-the-woke-will-go-dr-seuss-canceled-for-racial-undertones\/\">The Daily Wire<\/a> reported on February 26:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Learning for Justice \u2014 a left-wing educators group \u2014 is demanding that Dr. Seuss be canceled. A prominent Virginia school district has taken marching orders and ordered its schools to avoid \u201cconnecting Read Across America Day with Dr. Seuss.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Loudoun County Public Schools, one of the nation\u2019s most affluent school districts, announced that it will no longer recognize Dr. Seuss on his birthday. In an announcement obtained by The Daily Wire, the school district said that Dr. Seuss\u2019s children\u2019s books contain \u201cracial undertones\u201d that are not suitable for \u201cculturally responsive\u201d learning.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cRealizing that many schools continue to celebrate \u2018Read Across America Day\u2019 in partial recognition of Dr. Seuss\u2019 birthday, it is important for us to be cognizant of research that may challenge our practice in this regard,\u201d the announcement reads. \u201cAs we become more culturally responsive and racially conscious, all building leaders should know that in recent years there has been research revealing radical undertones in the books written and the illustrations drawn by Dr. Seuss.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The day is celebrated on March 2 unless it falls on a weekend, in which case it is held on the nearest school day.<\/p>\n<p>In 2000, former President Bill Clinton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/radio-remarks-read-across-america-day-0\">stated on radio<\/a>, \u201cOn March 2, volunteers across the country will celebrate Dr. Seuss\u2019 birthday by reading to more than 20 million youngsters in the third annual Read Across America Day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth former President Barack Obama and former President Donald Trump both recognized Dr. Seuss\u2019 contributions several times in their proclamations each year,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9315015\/Biden-cancels-Dr-Seuss-leaves-mention-childrens-favorite-Read-America-day.html?ito=social-twitter_dailymailus\">The Daily Mail<\/a> noted.<\/p>\n<p>Former President Trump stated in his 2018 proclamation to \u201calways remember the still-vibrant words of Dr. Seuss: \u2018You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former First Lady Melania Trump also specifically called attention to the popular children\u2019s book author. \u201cDr. Seuss has brought so much joy, laughter and enchantment into children\u2019s lives all around the globe for generations,\u201d she said in 2017. \u201cThrough his captivating rhymes, Dr. Seuss has delighted and inspired children while teaching them to read, to dream, and to care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/03\/01\/a-proclamation-on-read-across-america-day-2021\/\">proclamation<\/a> included statements such as these:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>I have always believed that America\u2019s children are the kite strings that keep our national ambitions aloft \u2014 the more we do today to spark their curiosity, their confidence, and their imaginations, the stronger our country will be tomorrow.\u00a0 The key to developing young learners into engaged, active, and innovative thinkers is instilling in them a love of reading at an early age.\u00a0 Reading is the gateway to countless skills and possibilities \u2014 it sets children on the path to a lifetime of discovery.\u00a0 On this Read Across America Day, we celebrate the parents, educators, librarians, and other champions of reading who help launch our Nation\u2019s children on that critical path.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Once a passion for reading takes hold in a young person, the benefits extend far beyond the classroom. \u00a0Reading broadens our perspective, introduces us to new worlds, cultures, and languages, and cultivates our sense of empathy and understanding of other people\u2019s experiences and views. \u00a0Reading informs us, empowers us, and teaches us the lessons of history. \u00a0It helps us make sense of the world as it is \u2014 and inspires us to dream of what it could be.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But no mention of Dr. Seuss.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
