The state agreed to pay Gordon a total that represents nine months of salary and health benefits, and he released the state from any potential legal claims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Michigan Republican Party responded to the news by calling it \u201cinexcusable,\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MIGOP\/status\/1366569768698998788\">asking<\/a>, \u201cWhat is @GovWhitmer trying to hide?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Top state-level Republicans sounded the alarm over the move in statements provided to Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still investigating the things the Whitmer Administration has done during COVID in plain sight, when we find out about a secret payoff behind closed doors,\u201d state Rep. Steve Johnson, chair of the Michigan House Oversight Committee, said. \u201cWhile it doesn\u2019t surprise me, the deception is shocking and shows how badly this Administration needs oversight so they can be held to account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Robert Gordon was the state\u2019s health director and played an instrumental role in the state\u2019s COVID-19 response,\u201d Ted Goodman, spokesman for the Michigan GOP, told Fox News in a statement.\u00a0\u201cMichigan taxpayers deserve to know the circumstances surrounding the resignation of Mr. Gordon in the middle of a public health crisis. Why is Gov. Whitmer refusing to explain this secret deal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Matt Hall, R-Marshall, said that he was \u201cstunned\u201d by the news, adding, \u201cThe people of Michigan deserve to know what was going on here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The story comes as Republican lawmakers in the state have called for an investigation into Whitmer\u2019s handling of nursing homes during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan State Sen. Jim Runestad (R-White Lake) sent letters to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and the U.S. Department of Justice demanding an investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGov. Whitmer\u2019s regional hub policy placed patients with and without COVID-19 in the same facilities and may have exacerbated the death toll in those facilities,\u201d Runestad <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senatorjimrunestad.com\/lawmakers-to-nessel-u-s-doj-time-to-investigate-michigans-coronavirus-nursing-home-policies\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cQuestions remain regarding the accuracy of data, compliance with CDC guidelines and compliance with our state\u2019s Freedom of Information Act. There is a critical need for a full investigation into these matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichiganders understand there are many, many similarities between Gov. Whitmer\u2019s handling of the virus and Gov.
